After having not bought any CDs for a while (in the run up to Christmas, Jen gets annoyed with me if I buy anything for myself, in case she had it in mind as a present), I've just splashed some cash at Amazon.

So, I need to get these CDs ripped and onto my empeg.

Ordinarily, I'd use EAC, but it doesn't work with the DVD writer in my Windows box. Neither does RMM, my second choice. There appears to be a compatibility problem with the nVidia IDE drivers and the drive. It works fine for everything else, so I'm not too bothered.

So, I'm going to have to use Linux. I've used grip in the past and, frankly, it sucked. Using cdparanoia from the command line is too much like hard work.

Can anyone recommend a good ripping application for Linux?

It must be able to (at a minimum):

• Download the track list from CDDB/FreeDB.
• Rip to WAV, naming the files accordingly.
  

Suggestions?

This is not any kind of help for you, but which part of grip didn't you like?
Yeah, it can't handle text with strange characters, and yeah it can't remember it's configuration options unless manually edited but... what else is sucky about it?

The UI is overly complicated -- I mean: 3 levels of tabs? Come on! It's got any number of buttons with really small icons on that don't have tooltips, and have no visible result when you click on them.

Also, it just plain doesn't work -- on my PC, it doesn't bring up a listing of the tracks on the CD, and (because of the crappy UI) I can't figure out how to tell it to refresh the list. I've configured it for /dev/sg0, and nothing happens.

Ah: I configure it for /dev/scd0 and it finally brings up a list of the tracks. It still sucks, though.

I tried RipperX, but I wasn't happy with how it named my files -- they had dashes instead of spaces and stuff. Ick.

Is the 3.0 version any better? The one I was using was the Debian/woody version.

I'm partial to abcde. It is just a command line front end to cdparanoia, lame and friends. Works much better for me than any GUI tool I have found (plus I have a deep hatred for X windows).

I usually just use grip for ripping. Afterwards, I have to edit the tags (since the content of Freedb is not always the way I would like to have it), and I want to mass rename the files anyway. http://easytag.sourceforge.net/ does a decent job for this.
