Like an idiot I ordered a Duo Pro Memorystick for my new Sony camera but it ends up I only needed a "Duo" Memorystick. The Dous are slower and cheaper than the Duo Pros but I'd prefer the standard Duo because my VAIO notebook only accepts the Duos... The ability to take the card out of the camera and pop it in my notebook outweighs the ability to take pictures faster in my mind...

So... if anyone out there wants my 256mb card, I'd trade if for a standard Duo card of the same capacity (so you'd be getting it cheap). I've only had it like a week, and today was the first time I tried to pop it in my notebook and learned my lesson.

I don't think you can get 256MB MemoryStick Duo's. Plain Duo's max out at 128MB. My phone uses the plain Duo and it's been mentioned that it's a limitation of the Duo standard. I've never seen a 256MB anyway

Ah.. dang, I'll have to figure out a better plan then if that's the fact... 128 would really be enough for a 2.0 megapixel camera, but I wouldn't know how to work out a trade cuz I'd be getting pretty hosed..

'hmmm

uh...perhaps 2 for 1? (That's not an offer...just a suggestion for an acceptable trade)

Going by Newegg prices (seems like a good benchmark), your Pro stick 256 (I assume it's Sony) is $97.

I do have a Lexar brand "regular" stick of 128, which they list for $48.

It's a difference of $49.

Hmm. I have a 5.0 mega pixel Sony P10 camera. the 128's always been enough, but the 256 sounds... well I'm a geek I guess.

If you're interested in a swap, let me know. I'd send you the 128MB stick + cash, and you'd have to just send yours the opposite direction at the same time.

Okay, lemme sleep on it. Is yours a Duo? (The 1/2 sized one)?

Wow, fast reply, I barely PM'd you just now.

Uh-oh, half size? I didn't realize there was more than one size... It's what I'd call "normal size", that is - an exact fit for my DSC-P10, and the same size as any other memory stick I've ever seen.

Please define "half size"?

***EDIT***

Ahh, here's a good page: http://www.memorystick.com/en/support/support.html , although I guess you knew this already. Wow, that much more, on that much less card? I guess I shouldn't be amazed.

The "Duo" are 1/2 sized and require an adapter to fit into a standard slot. The adapter is included so that's not an issue. I swear it's postage stamp size. The "Pro" is the new format that is higher capacity but you need to make sure it works with your camera. They can go upto 1GB.

Here is a pic of a non-Pro Duo (the Pro's are silver):

I just checked, the Sony site says my P-10 does take "pro".

If you've got the adapter, then it should work for me. And mine (the pair actually, 128 & 32, see PM) will work in your equipment.

Sleep on it, let me know.

And that little bugger can hold up to a GB now? Or maybe just the full sized ones... still amazing.

I know somebody with a P-10 and doesn't it take full sized gum memory sticks? If so then your memory sticks wouldn't work in his equipment unless you've also got duo's in their adapter?

MemoryStick and MemoryStick PRO are both gum sized sticks
MemoryStick Duo and MemoryStick Duo PRO are around the size of a postage stamp. They're compatible with full sized memory stick equipment if you insert them into an adapter.

The difference between plain MemoryStick and PRO's is that the protocol has changed slightly to accomodate the larger flash sizes available. In theory your equipment could be firmware upgraded to support the PRO sticks but Sony is notoriously bad for upgrades.

I must have been working on 1/2 a brain last night... even though my card would work with the supplied adapter, his cards would not work in mine... My camera ONLY take the Duo sized cards.

Yeah, I guess I was only looking at my side, and assuming you'd do the same for yours. Rats. Oh well.

It is even more amazing that Sony could manage to introduce a new memory format to a market that already had a good choice of existing memory format and then manage to get to the point a couple of years later where they have half a dozen different variations of their own format that aren't completely interchangable between all the devices that use them. Crazy...
