OK, I've got my flameproof underwear on ... Looking at all the pictures of installed units, I can't help but think that it looks, well, unfinished. It looks odd where the top has sort of 'lugs' at the edge of the top of the display (see Big John's installation http://www.bjnet.demon.co.uk/Empeg/Images/306 Installed.jpg). Is this because the sides and bottom are covered by the handle? IMHO it would look cleaner if the blue display panel were squared off all the way round when installed in dash. BTW - it's the New York motor show coming up ... will the empeg be on display anywhere? J.

I think the Empeg Mark 1 looks better in person than in that particular photo. I'm sure there are some photographs of you that aren't flattering, right? Well, the same thing can happen with the Empeg. Some photos accurately convey what it looks like, others don't. The handle does not "cover" the display, the display is actually cut to the shape you see there. But I believe your main complaint is the screws that are visible on the face. That is a common complaint amongst all Mark 1 users. But once you actually get the thing fired up and the visuals start going, you forget about all of that. Tony FabrisEmpeg #144

I'm sure there are some photographs of you that aren't flattering, right? Hey, let's not get personal here It's not the screws that 'bother' me, but the 'T' shape of the display. I think a clean rectangle would look better. I'll shut up now!

It's kinda necessary - what you're seeing is actually the carrying handle.. it folds out so that you can take the empeg in and out.. -mark

The Mark 2 will have improved styling over the Mark 1.
We won't be at the NY Motor Show - we're not scheduled for any shows until the MP3 summit in California this summer.

Jens,
Don't worry about the "T" because when you install it, ( at least for me) It looks like part of the car where the clock usually lights up. THe best part of it i think is the fact that you don't have a brand name right on the front, so when people look into the car, they can't tell that it's really a stereo, it just blends in with the car. ( i have a green one, it's when the display is off, it looks very dark, and hidden.)
bottom line is that you don't really even notice the screws on the front, and the "T" shape. IT just seems to all fit together.

I agree Tony, this shot doesn't represent the empeg in the best light. It's very stark and mainly to do with the digi camera CCD. See it at night Jens!!! I now *ONLY* drive at night...

I agree Tony, this shot doesn't represent the empeg in the best light. It's very stark and mainly to do with the digi camera CCD.Actually, the problem with the shot isn't the CCD. It's the fact that it was done straight-on with a flashbulb. The bright flashbulb illumintes the interior electronics under the face as well as perfectly capturing all the fingerprints. It also washes out the VF display- you can hardly see the display at all in that photo (although if you look close, you can see it's playing YYZ, so that makes it a good photo in my book). It blends nicely with the dash.
I have a VW caravelle, and another VW owner wondered if I had some sort of advanced driving computer. (He meant it.)
I like it.... alot.

I went to look at an Audi TT today ... took the Empeg with me to visually size it for the dash. The dealer looked at me strangly as I held it near the dash and didn't know what to make of my query as to how deep the dash was.
It'll fit but I won't buy the car; it doesn't complement my Empeg. (The TT is a bit too purist regarding interior styling for the interior tech look I desire.)
That seems so backwards. =]

No, that's not backwards at all. As far as I'm concerned, the Empeg is more important than the car that holds it. One of the factors that helped me settle on my new car was that the dash opening was standard DIN-sized and its speaker locations were the correct sizes for my existing equipment. I should have the Empeg into the car today or tomorrow, and I'll write something up for "installation notes" shortly thereafter. Tony FabrisEmpeg #144

In order to please the TT owners, Empeg should consider making a mirror shades style face plate. This will match the shiny brushed aluminum look in the TT cockpit. :)

Hey, I've got my Audi TT on order (only 3 months to go ... sigh).
Be careful what you say, I think that it and the empeg will be a complmentary pair, especially with the BOSE sound system installed.
Can't wait!
On the other hand, I've got to make a decision about the MkII vs my MkI and also to find a good installer who I trust, since Dominic@CambsCar appears to have disappeared.
Hugo, et al, you're down the road from CambsCar, what happened?
Paul.

Phaigh, I'm too much of a geek. I expected the interior of the TT to be teched out with gadgetry that was loaded with eye candy. Instead it was very spartan. This is a purist roadster look and I should have expected it given that the convertible is not far behind. (I -DID- like the stereo faceplate cover ... wish my MR2 had something similar.)
You'll definately want a MkII to compliment the red interior lighting... And probably one of Big John's RM-X2S interface modules (if/when he produces it) coupled with a RM-X2S so you can easily control the unit sans remote or buttons.

Nothing happened with Cambridge Car Audio, I guess Dominic is just too busy to visit the BBS these days. They still seem to reply to email very quickly.

I think the Mark 2 may not look so out of place in the TT (says he cryptically).

Now this is either a ploy to sell more Mk2's or more TT's. Rob, you got a contract with Audi? Paul. Paul Haigh, 6GB, Blue Reg: 4120 - Serial 00254
