Encoding with default-parameters leads to very high quality, that in general exceeds the quality of known MP3-encoders like Lame. MPEGplus shows nearly no preechos or flanging.
MPEGplus - regarding to the quality - works very stable, what means that i do only know very few signals on which differences to the original audiosignal are audible.
With the current version - encoder with StreamVersion 7 (SV7) - the average bitrates are about 150 to 160 kbit/s. Noncritical signals are going to about 100 kbit/s, more critical signals are going up to about 200 kbit/s.
The Encoder runs with 2x realtime on a P3-750, the Winamp-plugin needs about 4% CPU-load.

hmm i allso found a site that compares all the standard codecs (WMA, mp3, VQF) with MP+. Very interesting reading for those of you who are interested. i would love to talk to someone who could possibly port over the mp+ codec to the empeg. i am going to rip a few cds at work today. seems like mp+ is almost like vbr but a little better. (it will encode at up to 1.2mbps.(damn) we will let my ears do the final testing.

Well I found http://redrival.com/switch/mpegplus/

Tried it (wintel) with "Hate to love" from Shania Twain which resulted in major artefacts at 128kb (since then I'm a LAMEr with VBR upto 256kbs).

With the std. options I still hear (very minor) artefacts (0:48+). When I use -VBRmode 2 it does seem to help but then the filesize is almost equal to my mp3's (and it's almost as slow as lame with the encoding).

This thing seems to be in development though so it could get better. Could also be i'm hearing ghost artefacts (it's getting late). I'm curious to hear what others think of it.

They just released the sourcecode of the decoder so it should be "easy" for the guys@empeg to build a binary
