I have been having this problem for about 6 months. I like to listen to the entire contents of my empeg (about 7600 songs) on random. When I load the entire contents it will work when I first try. The problem is the next time it boots up, it shows:

"End of playlist"
" (that's the pause icon)
0:00
[-/-]s

any ideas?

I think it might be the Negative Spike Bug. I get that thump when I turn of my car.

Do I just email support?

It's much faster and easier to solve the negative spike bug yourself by putting in your own diode. There are very clear instructions, including a picture, linked from that FAQ link.

However, before assuming that...

- If you can reproduce the problem on AC power, it is not the negative spike bug.
- If you cannot reproduce the problem with a small playlist, it is also not the negative spike bug.

So check those first.

huh...I've got the same EXACT problem and I have just over 6000 tracks and a MK2A. When I listen to a genre or playlist I don't have the problem (anything that has fewer tracks).

Are either of you using "reservecahce"?

Does "reservecache" take away memory for the database?

Not in a way that would cause this problem. The size limit here is on the remembered running order area in the scratch partition, which isn't affected by reservecache.

The problem is that this remembered running order takes space for every reference to every song, not just every song. So if you play your whole player, and you've got five references to every song (perhaps in auto-soup-generated playlists), you'll hit the limit before a person with only three references per song does. That might be the difference between one person's 6000 and another's 7600.

You guys who are having the problem, have you got lots of references to each song? Say, one in an Artists playlist, one in Artist/Album, one in Genre, and so on?

Possibly. I'll delete some playlists to see if that fixes it.

Thanks.

Yes, deleting a few playlists fixed the problem.

Thanks.

Either that, or just re-syncing... You might want to try and create them again, just to see if it was the number of playlists or the sync.

I only have one reference to each song (i think)>

The playlists are a series of artists > then you can drill down into the albums > then drill down into the songs.

Does that make more than one reference?

I have deleted some songs (below 7400 now which is how many i had when shuffling the entire player worked) and it is still not remembering the place. I "forgets" on restart if there are more than two albums (50 songs or so)

No, just one.

Oh, that's definitely not normal. Looks like whatever's wrong, it isn't the remembered running order problem.

Then yeah, it's not the running-order-space problem.

Questions:

- Does the problem only happen in the car? Can you reproduce the problem on AC power?

- Are you running any third party software other than the main player software and Hijack?

- Does the player boot normally or is there a long pause on "rebuilding music databases"?

-the problem is consitent whether it is in the car or on AC power

-there is no other software and hijack is no longer installed

-there is a bit of a pause on "rebuilding music databases" - my personal loading graphiv flashes really quickly - much quicker than my friend's empegs

thanks again for your help!

Then try this and see if that fixes it.
