Just got my player back (thanks Rob!) after a long time out of action, changed operating systems in that time so starting from scratch. From what I've seen you can't use USB with XP (beat to bloody pulp if wrong) so I'm uploading using the serial cable.
Screw. This.
10 minutes and we've uploaded less than 10meg! Tell me there is a better way! I'm not 100% sure on the XP and USB issue, am I right? If I am, there is no mention of it in the install info and infact the release notes have a whole lot of info about setting up USB with XP, so I'm a bit confused.
Confound this Empeg unit, I'm usually pretty good with technical stuff, but this thing makes a complete newbie out of me every time!

Be prepared to be pulped. See here.
Ethernet is a better option. This FAQ entry explains more. (Edit: Faster = Better?)

Hmmmm.... the player is runnign version 2 and I just downloaded the latest Emplode (2), I performed the proper driver install as per release notes (couldn't even find Empeg untilt then) so is there anything else I must do? As is using USB you get the icon and it thinks it's found my Empeg when opening up Emplode, however when you get it to connect I get an error message saying it can't download (can get error code if this thing ever finishes uploading to Empeg!).
Also, while I'm taking up space, when you delete from Emplode it says it's deleting the playlist entry, not the actual file (have to go to Artist for that). Is there anyway to get it to delete the file if the playlist entry you delete is the only existing instance of that file?

What's the text of the error message that you are getting when it cannot dowload?
As to the second question, I'll check later but IIRC there's a check box that can be selected when deleting a track from a playlist that will remove it from the player. (I say I'll check because I see the following in the FAQ that doesn't cover this feature) Someone tell me if I dreamed this.
[FAQ]
· How can I be sure that I've deleted all copies of a given song?
In versions of Emplode prior to 2.0, you must delete every copy of the song from every playlist. After the last copy has been deleted from the last playlist, the song file will be removed from the player.
In Emplode 2.0 and later, there is a special set of views which automatically categorize your songs. They are named "Artists", "Albums", "Genres", "Years", and "All Tracks". If you delete a song from your personal playlists, it will still exist in these views. Delete the song from one of these views to remove it from the player.

the player is runnign version 2 and I just downloaded the latest Emplode (2), I performed the proper driver install as per release notes Assuming you really installed the latest emplode as well (not just the new driver), then this should work. What does help/about in Emplode say, and what does About say on the player? Does the USB port on your computer really work? In other words, do you have other USB devices and do they work right?
Is there anyway to get it to delete the file if the playlist entry you delete is the only existing instance of that file? It has the little check box that lets you do that, is that what you mean?
If you mean to have it ONLY delete the file IF the playlist entry is the last thing, then no, it doesn't do that in 2.0. You need to either check the box when deleting, or go to one of the soup views.

Can you confirm that the same USB port and cable work with another device? (hub, printer, scanner)

Well, my smart card reader works fine in both USB slots, however interestingly Emplode only recognizes my Empeg in one of them. I recall this was the case previously when I had USB working with W2K as well.

Interesting.
0xC0041837 is "No anode" (Player error)
I have no idea what that means.

Well, I tried hooking it up to another computer running XP, and.... all went well, so we know the player is ok (no trip back to the land of clogs and windmills for you!), so what possibilities does this leave (and what to do about them) on the computer end?

so what possibilities does this leave (and what to do about them) on the computer end? - Checking with the motherboard manufacturer to see if they have an updated BIOS that fixes problems with its USB support.
- Checking with the motherboard manufacturer to see if they have updated Windows XP drivers for the USB on the motherboard.
Don't laugh, I've seen this kind of thing happen with USB.

What motherboards, and particularly what chipsets, do these computers have?

Just a thought.... I don't know what advantages JEmplode has, but would it possibly overcome this problem somehow?
