PLEASE!!! I've had my rio Mark 2 for almost 2 years now, and I've always had 1 drive, now I"m trying to add a drive and it's a fricken night mare... I was up till 5am last night trying to get this thing going!! Can somone PLEASE just give me the few basic steps in adding another HD to my RIO... AND YES I have been to: http://www.riocar.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Drive_Upgrade&file=index
And the instructions are WAY to vague. Its like getting a whole happymeal when all I wanted was a burger.. dum analogy, but you get my point.. (no offense to the author).. I guess I"m just frustrated, and I can't extract the basic steps.. Could some merciful Pilgrim PLEASE, just list the basic steps, necessary for this process. Or another link. THANKYOU for ANYTHING!

Specs/ Problem:
Rio Mark 2

I'm adding a 20gig IBM Travelstar to a 30gig IBM Travelstar.

Both have update installed, and both work separatly.

When their together, With jumper on the slave, it boots up fine, however, I don't see the second drive in Emplode or the extra drive space I thought I would have at the bottom of emplode, all I see is the space on the master (30gig)...

Greetings!

Okay. If both work individually in the player, but not together... You are saying that it boots fine? Could you please post a boot log, just in case. It sounds like it is not mounting the music partitions on the new slave 20GB drive. The boot log might help.

One other thing to check - do you have the hijack option installed that ignores the second hard drive? It is there to make it boot faster. This has caught people in the past.

Edit: Tony, I was searching the FAQ for the hijack disable second drive check, when I saw that the largest disk drive is still 60GB. When you have time, you might want to update this to the 80GB, with the caveat that Laura found about running builder on an 80GB drive from a Mark I.

ok.. lets pretend that I know nothing about linux first and foremost. All I do is install my automatic updates when I'm told to.

I know for a fact that I don't have the hijack option installed.

And Is a the boot log basically what pops up on Hyperterminal when I start my Rio Mark 2 ?? Is that what you need?

thanks

Greetings!

The boot log is the text that hyperterm will show when the empeg is first powered up. Basically, I just want to verify that it finds the second hard drive, that the data it sees is (basically) correct for a 20GB travelstar and any errors it sees when it tries to mount the partition.

Assuming that both drives work when they are hooked up alone as master, I am thinking it might be...

a) a connector on your cable is bad, so that the second drive is not seen at all during the boot
b) the drive is seen, but the partition mount never happens
c) the drive is seen, it tries to load the partition, but fails and gives an error message
d) both partitions mount properly, but the player software is confused by what it sees

Greetings!

Hm. Perfect. It also shows that both of the hard drives are being located, and that they are being read properly, showing up as the right type of drive and size:

Probing primary interface...
hda: IC25N030ATCS04-0, ATA DISK drive
hdb: IBM-DJSA-220, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x000-0x007,0x038 on irq 6
hda: IC25N030ATCS04-0, 28615MB w/1768kB Cache, CHS=58140/16/63
hdb: IBM-DJSA-220, 19077MB w/1874kB Cache, CHS=38760/16/63

It also shows that it is finding the partitions correctly on both drives (hda & hdb):

Partition check:
hda: hda1 < hda5 hda6 > hda2 hda3 hda4
hdb: hdb1 < hdb5 hdb6 > hdb2 hdb3 hdb4

So... This gets a bit more interesting.

Do you have the developer version of the player loaded, or the consumer one? If you have the developer version, you can get to the shell prompt by typing "q" after it boots. If you can do this, please do the following and let me know what happens:

cd /drive0/var
ls
cd /drive0/fids
ls
cd /drive1
ls
cd /drive1/var
ls
cd /drive1/fids
ls

Basically, I just want to look around to see what the player thinks it sees in these directories.

Greetings!

Okay. Well, this will not help much, I am afraid. Basically, you are running the consumer version as seen by:

q
Switching to shell-player loop
Starting bash.
no shell!
Shell exit
player.cpp : 385:empeg-car 2.00 2003/04/01.
Prolux 4 empeg car - 2.1434 Mar 26 2003
Vcb: 0x4086d000

The q command worked, but there was no shell to go back to. In order for me to go further, I would need to have you install the developer image. This would allow me (well, you) to get to the command line of the player, to examine the hard drives directly. I am guessing that you have a Mark2 or 2A.

Edit: oh, and there is a space between the cd and the slash (/). And it is drive0 (zero).

Not a problem. The next step (installing developer) will take a little time. I am usually around, somewhere...

I know you must have been pretty stessed out when you posted this, but for the record, that Drive Upgrade Tutorial is the best writen tutorial I have ever read on the web. I didn't realize this until I went to a few car sites to learn how to bolt on parts to my car.

If anything, the Upgrade Guide is anything but vague. It lists every possibility and provides information for each situtation. My guess is that you didn't get a chance to read it before starting your upgrade, especially this part:

In reply to:

Make sure you also have the proper standard ".upgrade" file for your player ready. You will need to re-install the player software upgrade onto the new disk drive after formatting it. Make sure that it matches the currently installed software on the player, and is the correct one for your player model (Mark 1 or Mark 2). Make it the developer version so that you can drop to the shell prompt during the procedure if you have to (you can go back to the consumer version after you're all done if you want). If necessary, upgrade the player software before starting this procedure to make certain that it's the same one as what you'll be installing on the new disk. This is important, so that a mismatch between the flash kernel and the player on the disk doesn't happen as you swap disks.

This part is writen in the section listing things you need to get set before you take tools to your player.

Again, I know you were stressed when you wrote this, so no biggy. I don't know anything about Linux either, except what has been writen in that guide. And I am certainly NOT a hardware guy, so if you take the time to slowly read through it, I'm sure you'll find what you need.

OK. I"m back.. I copied and pasted all the commands but nothing came up.. Listen... what would be the normal procedure for adding another drive?? This is what I did.

1.Physically Install it with the slave jumper, slave is plugged into the middle plug in the cable
2. run "car2-builder-20011022" then run the "consumer 2.00" update.
3. boot up and it works but emplode doesn't see the second drive (the slave 20gig drive)

You need to install the developer build before you can run the commands. Download it from the empeg.com site.
It doesn't matter if you leave it with the developer build.

Listen, you only run the Builder when the "virgin" drive is connected. If only the virgin drive is plugged in, it would be the Master and would not be jumped as Slave.

It sounds like you had both drives plugged in when you ran the builder which is a big NO NO in the Upgrade Guide (and has a very big warning about this). If the virgin drive was the only thing connected, and you had it jumpered as Slave when you ran the Builder, it would not have worked. If it didn't work, the virgin drive would never have been formatted and would explain why emplode does not see the extra space (but the drive would still show up as a physical device during the boot sequence).

Listen, even if you did that correctly, you'll need to install the Developer version of the 2.00 software here.

Listen, if I were you, I'd read the Upgrade Guide first, from beginning to end. And then start over from scratch and take you time.

Thanks brad, I appreciate it... I think what happened, is that I did so many things wrong at first that I thought were right bc it was so late and I was very tired, that I forgot what I did.. but I"m going to do this from start and we'll see what happens. Thanks for your patience.

Greetings!

It might be a good idea to retrace your steps. Only I would recommend using the developer version if possible. You will not see any difference when using it, but it will allow for more troubleshooting if you run into trouble. Give this a shot and let everyone here know if you have any trouble.
