Well, the delivery dude dropped by late yesterday with my new monitor, and I have to say, this thing exceeds my (very high) expectations!

It's a BenQ (Acer) FP2081: 20.1" LCD flat panel display, 1600x1200.
My cost was about CAD$1500 from the local distributor, and current retail pricing seems to be around US$1100-$1200.

Worth every penny, and then some! So if you're in the market for a large monitor, or more desk space by eliminating your current 21" behemoth, then search no further!

The display is bright, very crisp, larger than my 21" CRT display, and has a huge colour gamut for my photography work. Four inputs (including DVI-D), picture-in-picture, and wall-mountable.

Cheers!

You can get the Dell FP2000 for around US$800 (does 1600x1200) if you watch for specials.

Still not big enough for viewing you photos at 100% though...

(I'm still at 1024x768, so the shots from my 10D fill over six screen fulls)

Yup, the Dell is definitely a good deal, for slightly older and slower LCD tech.
But top rated stuff, that!

No, you're right!

Unfortunately, the IBM monitor capable of making my 3kx2k pixel photos look like icons is still about US$8000 or so..

I'm more interested in a 15" QXGA LCD screen... Some of the NEC laptops have them now. I'm going for DPI instead of actual physical screen size

The 20" QXGA IBM would be nice as well...

I had one of these (the 24.1" one) on my desk for a month or two. It was sah-weet.

Now that is nice, if only I could find space on my already crowded desk for one of those!

Does 1600x1200, which was all I really cared about. Also, it wasn't my money

It's really a shame there are no cheap 14" LCDs. (Or even a 10")

I have a machine I need to console whose console gets used ~never. It doesn't need high res, it needs working text mode and occasional 640x480 or maybe 800x600.

But it's not worth $200+ to me to get rid of the damaged monitor I'm using to console it now.

I think circuit-city sells automotive LCDs (analog, for TV/DVD use) that accept composite inputs for under $100. Saw them last time I was there, back in Feb. Designed for ceiling mount in an automobile, but easily adapted to other uses.

But then I need a VGA->composite, and possibly such won't do text mode.

But it's something to consider, I guess.

You can get the Viewsonic version (VP2290b) for about $6200 now. I'm gonna buy two! Haha.
Seriously, I must figure out how to convince my boss to pay for one of these.

Agreed. It's a real shame that you can't even get a 1600x1200 desktop screen that's smaller than 18 inches! My 15 inch Dell laptop can manage that resolution.

I would happily pay more for a 15 inch QXGA desktop LCD than I would for a 17 inch 1280x1024 LCD.
