I'm looking for a backup-program that can make a backup of a machine running Win2000 and store the backup on a mapped network-drive (residing on a Linux-machine). I would like a program that I can set to make a backup, say three times a week, doing one full and two incremental backups and overwrite the old backups (so that the Linux-disk won't fill up...). This will of course only give me one week worth of backup, but this is only in case the hard-drive on the 2000-machine(s) gets trashed again.... Preferably low-cost or free....

Anyone know of such a program?

I believe Norton/Symantec Ghost will allow you to do that. It's supposedly scriptable in some way, but I've never seen it. It's $70, so it's not cheap, but it's not exactly expensive, either. You can download a trial version for free from the Symantec web site. I don't know how it's restricted, but you could probably at least find out if it'll do the right thing for you.

I use Symantec Ghost enterprise/server to backup all my home machines, theres a client that can be scheduled to run to backup to a network drive. The only downside is the machine is unusable while its backin up.

If you don't care about system & OS backups, and just regular old files, I use Mehul's backup. It's end of life shareware. Dumb easy to use & has never given me a moment of trouble. ftp://castlegree(REMOVETHIS)nwald.dyndns.org mback11.zip

At the office I use Seagate Backup Exec, but it is $$$$.

Tried to get the file from your ftp-server, but only got the error-message: "Could not open ftp channel". Thanks though.

Yeah, I know about Ghost (also from another thread about backups). But also like in that thread, I would like to backup the whole drive so that if need be, I (or my dad or his colleague that the machines belong to) can just either use a emergency recover disk or reinstall the OS and the backup-program and get the data back. And IIRC from the other thread, Ghost can't backup system-files while Winblows is running.

I've got an older version of Cheyenne ArcServe here at work. Maybe I'll just make an, hrmm, "evaluation copy" and test if that works....

IIRC Arcserve versions before A.S. 2000 won't do 2000. Given what you describe above, Mehul's wouldn't do for your needs.

Have you looked at NTbackup or maybe just called Backup.
Should be under Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools. That will store to a file any where you want it to and I think you can schedule it, if it doesn't have the menu system to do it you could check Micro$oft's knowledge base I think it can be controlled via the command prompt.

Hey no prob people tend to forget that that is there. FYI I believe that version is just a limited version of Seagate's backup. Sometimes Micro$oft does some good things for use poor users. LOL
