There's two pictures that look interesting, on the second row the second and third picture along, are these off air? The one on the left looks like the strangest test pattern I've ever seen, even worse than Testcard M....

Yes, they are off the air, the TV station accidently showed the test patterns, which are part of a demo loop that ABC shows, when there is no actual programming.

They are not 720P downconverts. ABC uses 720P natively. That is the format they chose for HDTV.

most good hdtv's will upconvert 720 to 1080i, if im not mistake. at least my tv and my friends do this, but im sreu there are some that will down convert that signal to 480p

Yes, most HDTV's upconvert everything to 1080i, with the exception of output from a progressive scan DVD player, which the TV will display 480P.

The only displays that I know of on the market which can show native 720p are a couple of Plasma and one early HDTV rear projection display from Panasonic.

In my case, my set top box(Dish Network 6000) is doing the upconverting to 1080i from 720p. My Home Theater PC also upconverts to 1080i, including DVD playback, which looks spectacular by the way.

From what I heard 1080p will become that standard in the future, basically your display will upcovert everything to 1080p.

Only recent ones. Mine is a couple of years old. When it was made, it was one of the best available. But it was made before ABC went on the air with HD programming. It won't upconvert 720 to 1080. My HDTV decoder box will do the upconverting, but pixel conversion always involves trade-offs (usually bilinear filtering to hide aliasing due to the conversion).

I believe you're referring to what the movie-makers call "24p", which is 1080 lines, progressive scan, at 24 frames per second. It's becoming the standard for filming movies with high-def cameras, but I don't think it's going to become the standard distribution method for broadcast HD. It's great for making movies because then it can go straight into the editing and compositing software without a conversion, then be printed directly to film that way. But for broadcast, that format consumes nearly twice as much bandwidth as 1080i does, so I don't expect to see it replace 1080i.

I'm no industry insider, so I could be wrong. I'd be curious to know who you heard that from?
