Ok, what the hell is this stuff? My dad bought a jar of pickles and one of the ingredients listed is Spirit Viniger. Don't spirits refer to some sort of alcohol based concoction? What about that Chocolate alcohol stuff that is found in some products? Maybe its not called Chocoloate alcohol but there is something like that isn't there?

Because of religious reasons, my family and i stay away from alcohol (although i doubt i'd drink if religion weren't in the way). Anyhow, I had no idea what spirit viniger was and my dad didn't want to take any chances.

I always find it terribly amusing when my family and I are confronted with situations like this. A while back we discovered "Rubios", a restaurant whose main feature is the Fish taco. We found that we loved these damn things and for about 6 weeks, we were regulars there. One day I went there with my dad and decided to acutally look up at the menu instead of just ordering. Upon doing this, I found that the fish tacos were beer battered. Now, theres always the argument that the alcohol evaporates, but my dad wouldn't have any of it. Then there was the situation with the Marie Calanders "Kalua Cheesecake". We had no idea what Kalua was, and to us, it just looked like Chocolate. Little did we know.

I do. I've got some friends who practice the same thing because of their religion. I respect it, even to the point of making sure that if we make Teriyaki Chicken for a dinner party, we get the kind of sauce that doesn't have alcohol in it.

Oh, I respect it, I'm perfectly fine with it, but it is a little um, extreme when you realize that all of the alcohol has indeed been removed from the items during cooking. I don't want to step on anyone's beliefs, but at that point, you're not really avoiding consumption of alcohol, you're avoiding consumption of previously alcoholic subtances which have had the alcohol boiled away. Nothing wrong with it though.

You'll notice they can sell it to minors, so it must be a pretty convincing argument.

I don't know... I mean, Not consuming alcohol because of religion is one thing, but trying to avoid it in all situations is a little extreme. If it really is that big a deal, I can understand that, but man, I just had a root canal done (20 mins ago) and they used alcohol there. Avoiding it completely may be impossible.

Well, did have a booze content. All acetic acid in vinegar is the byproduct of specific bacteria digesting alcohol.

It works better if you don't also add manual line breaks between each [ q ] command, since the blockquite embedded into those commands should take care of it.

Yeah, I wish there were a way around that extra carriage return after lists and blockquotes. Bugs me when I'm coding straight HTML, too. Wonder what their reasoning was behind spec'ing it that way in HTML?

Well, there is a way around it... we could just not do the blockquotes... Or do the manual orange/i commands again...

Injected into the canal of the tooth. After cleaning the canal out, they wash with hyperchlorite, then peroxide, then alcohol. All 3 forced into the canal with a syringe. Some of it invariably leaks into the jaw. So I guess you could say some of it was "consumed".

No more so, really, than an orthodox Jew keeping kosher. To an "outsider" these restrictions might seem silly, but within the guidelines of the particular religion it is perfectly logical and reasonable.

Just to make myself seem even more weird...

Say I go to a friends house and he offers me the other half of a turkey, roast beef and ham sandwich. I can't bring myself to just remove the ham and eat the rest of the sandwich. The way i figure it, the "ham juices" are still there.

There's a new branch of Subway opening just a few hundred yards from my house, so I'll be able to practice being very specific about things in there before I next visit the US.

When the fast food joint Burger King first opened, their slogan was ``Have It Your Way'', meaning that you got to choose what toppings you wanted on your burger. (AFAIK, this is still their slogan, or one of them.) However, they took this so far as to mean that there was no default configuration. You had to tell them exactly what you wanted, even if it was an ISO-standard mustard-ketchup-pickles burger. This procedure was quickly changed as people, like you, didn't want to specify everything.

Personally, I like to get what I want, not what someone else wants. But I understand your point.
