This is the 2nd time in a month that i've gotten child porn spam in my inbox and you have no idea how pissed I am! It's actual pictures and it's just THE most discusting thing I have ever seen.
Does anyone know the best route to take in helping bring these people to justice? As in forwarding this email ( I deleted the last and blocked them) to some agency specializing in tracking down these sick f**ks? I've searched myself and only found a few that didn't look really organized and only one allowed posting, but only URL's so I posted the URL's of the pics attached to the email but I don't think thats enough. Any help would be appreciated.
At this point I have a good mind to buy a shotgun and track them dowm myself i'm so discusted.

You are not the only person in this world who is sick and tired of this problem. I think everyone with an email account is affected by this in one way or another.
I don't have any solutions for you specifically. My local internet service provider has a really good anti-spam system in place that's kept my mailbox essentially spam-free for a very long time. It's a slight pain sometimes when it blocks legitimate messages from getting through, but it does it so rarely these days that I now consider the trade-off acceptable.
I hope there's a global solution to this problem by the time my daughter is old enough to start begging for her own email address.

It's not the blocking i'm concerned with, I can handle that myself, I just don't want to delete it, block it and forget about it. I want to do something about it. At least to the extent that I get the email and can forward it off somewhere.
If there isn't, then I guess it's just delete and forget
*sigh*

ok, in doing a little tracking myself, I went to the ip from the origin of the images and referring web site. It turns out to be some Realty Advisor company in Florida. The child porn site is blatenly in subdir's on their main site which is completely indexable. The dates show it was just upped there this morning along with some French warez. I have emailed the CEO and notified him of this, hopefully it will be taken down sometime tomorrow.

The probe messages from your ISP suck. They protect you from junk mail at the expense of ... junk mail.

yes these guys are out of control, they just recently took over one of my big clients servers and start using the server to spam out, Dell had to take the server offline, oh what a pain, so the site has been down the last few days as we try to scamblin on getting it back up, I prefer not to say the name of the company as im sure most of you have heard of them.

The FBI takes a very serious interest in these offenses.

True. But they only happen once, and then never again after that.

One of my mailboxes gets MASSES of this lollita crap. It's very annoying as I can't open that mailbox in front of people who don't know me well, and it seems impossible to get off the lists. I suspect most if not all of it comes from one spam list, as the format is usually very similar.
Almost all the sites appear to be in Russia.

Yes, they do, as do the RCMP here in Canada.
And please note that you are now guilty of possession of child porn. The fact that you have/had an image on your computer is an AUTOMATIC CONVICTION should they choose to prosecute you and examine the hard disk for fragments. Your "story" about how it got there is irrelevant. Nice world, eh?

Yeah, that would make me think twice about calling any authorities. Even if they didn't prosecute, I'd be worrying for a long time. What's the statue of limitations on that? If you ever got on the wrong side of someone in authority, they could drag that out, convict you (on your own 'confession'), and (IIRC) place you on the sex offenders list so basically your entire life gets ruined.
I'm glad that I've been fortunate enough to not have received such filth, and hope I never do. Touch wood

If that ever happened to me, I would print out some pictures of child porn and mail it to the prosecuting attorney. Then he would be guilty too.

Interesting idea, although that also puts you in the 'distribution' business. Since such emails are often interstate or international in nature, I'd suggest that the US Attorney General would be a better recipient.
One really has to wonder how the Authorities responsible for investigating such crimes can do their job. Or do they have special powers that allow them to download and possess such material?

Presumably it's the same legal mechanism that lets the police confiscate drugs or stolen property without running round charging one another for possession of them. It's an interesting question, though: is it a special exemption for the police? If you perform a citizen's arrest for possession, and take the stuff from the offender, are you then in possession?

The only possession I have is the saved email sitting in my spam folder along with hundreds of other porn and other spam awaiting me to get off my butt and add them to my block list. After tracking down the site they originated from I deleted all my cache. And since I had no need to download anything directly, there's nothing else on my laptop. If someone does TRY and prosecute me for getting a spam email and saving it till I have the time to call the FBI to report it and help bring these people to justice, then .... well, lets not get into that, lets just say i'll be breaking a hell of a lot more laws than possesion of CP than they would prefer.
I was way too busy on Friday to call, i'll be doing it first thing Monday morning hopefully and post any updates if anyone would care to know.

Deleting an email does not erase all its data from disk.. nor does overwriting a file with another file.. they look for those things, and those things actually are treated as admissible evidence.. sometimes ya just gotta wonder..

Just got off the phone with the FBI. The guy had me print out the header ifno on the email along with the html source and fax it over to him ... in searching through my spam folder for the email I came across another one and did the same for that one too. He said someone might be in contact with me. I searched the website that was hacked where the images came from and it seems to be locked down now and images removed.

There was a case in my hometown where someone brought some weed they had found growing to the police station. That person was charged with possession. The charges were later dropped once word got around town about what had happened.

If they come around to 'interview' you, have at least one witness and a lawyer. This is not a subject you want to be complacent about.

...And a whole thread on this site that proves your serious intent to do something responsible, before you contacted the authorities.

It's hard to remember that when you're by your self in an interview room

You should never be alone in an interview room. At least not here in the states. Always remain mute except to utter "I want my lawyer." It's amazing how easy it is to misspeak. And on tape, that could be a problem.
