Hi, I want to bring my backup unit up in the car and want to clone my original MK2 to it. I use the latest beta soft (13) and the latest emplode and hijack kernel, latest (30). The clone tool coming with emplode doesnt work well, it finds both players eventually but doesnt recognize the one players name even tthough it finds it and never allows me to clone. button always greyed out. I know its probably the mixture of beta soft with the clone tool doesnt go well together (or?) .

How would you recommend doing that? Cant I just use emplode for that, drag and drop with two players ? I guess no.

Is there an easy way?

Any help is appreciated! Greetings! And Thanks! S.

Easy would depend on how comfy you are on a command line...

Roger has some info on his homepage, here and here.

You could possibly give the Raelians a ring if all else fails...

Heres a link to a Tutorial I wrote up some time ago. Although it did not receive much fanfare here, only one person commented on it, I spent a good deal of time on it and think it might help you if you are Linux challenged. http://home.earthlink.net/~charles1357/data/

Had the same problem trying to clone 2 players recently. Ended up going back to software version 1.03 and cloning then going back to beta software after the clone was done. FWIW

Part of the reason that I've not read your document is that it's a Word Document. Try converting it to HTML -- you might get more people reading it.

So all this time you haven't been reading my (Word format) functional specifications! That explains a lot!

I don't know what's worse these days; Word or Acrobat. Word wins the booby prize I guess, but I think either qualify as a not-readily browsable medium, for me HTML wins every time.

There's a PDF reader for basically every platform, often both a closed- and open-source one. In addition, PDFs appear the exact same way (barring any poorly-generated ones that are missing fonts) on every platform. Why would anyone not like PDF?

Why would anyone not like PDF

Because, while I agree that PDF is a great tool for the things it is good at, people use it on the web for things that it wasn't designed for and isn't good at.

It's so frustrating when you are browsing a pefectly good website and then you suddenly get thrown into a large PDF document containing a couple of paragraphs of text and some pointless graphics (with the text appearing two pages in because the first two pages are flashy corporate logos and [censored]). All because someone in the marketing department couldn't be bothered to take the two paragraphs of text out of their Quark prepared product spec brochure and put it directly into an HTML file.

Still, at least it's better than a Word document being used for the same thing...

Fair enough. I guess I meant to say ``Why would anyone not like PDF in an appropriate context?''

Even worse are links to .pdf's that say EXACTLY the same thing as the referring page, usually at the bottom so you have to wait for the rest of the uncompressed page to d/l & render.

Guys, maybe you can help me again, I have read though the docs provided (thanks for them) but I still have some open questions, maybe you can help me again. Here is what I have:

Old Player is single disk, 10GB drive
New player is dual disk, 2*20GB
I may upgrade to 2*60GB before I go with the clone thing - I only want to do it once in my life (?)...

Both have latest beta and latest HiJack installed. So both have an FTP server available. Both are conencted to a LAN and get their IP addresses assigned via DHCP and they are known.

I guess best solution to clone the player would be just stupid FTP and mget all necessary stuff from old player, but what exactly? Or am I taking the wrong approach here? Sorry for my stupidity, I just dont want to loose the stuff on the player and be a bit cautious.

Thanks again for your help and have a nice weekend, greets S.

I don't think the FTP server supports transfer to another FTP site controlled by a FTP client on your PC - you'd have to get a FTP client onto one of empegs, or download to PC first and then upload to the new empeg.

I'd just build the new drive (using the builder image) and then mount it as (new) primary
with the old as temporary slave and copy the stuff over to the new drive. Then build and mount the second new drive as new slave. To change the drives you'll have to open the player anyway...
