That's perfectly okay. Half the artists (mostly the top half), are simply generic hard rock, or what passes for it these days. Most of those lead singers just want to be Eddie Vedder but with 1/8th the talent and thought process.

I find that not listening to the radio effective insulates me from radio overplay. To that extent, I quite like the Jimmy Eat World album (``Bleed American'' or ``Jimmy Eat World'', depending on whether you purchased it before or after Sept. 11, 2001). I went and got an older one of theirs, though, and it's not even remotely as good.

This, to me, brings up an interesting thought... We really haven't had any real "movements" in rock music since the grunge days of the early 90's. There were some minor diversions in this direction and that, like the rap/rock combo stuff of Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit, or the boy-band/pop idol stuff of NSync and Britney. But really, popular music has had no real direction for the last decade. I'm finding myself wondering what this decade will be remembered for when we look back on it... I know I'm jumping the gun a little here since it's only 2003, but by 1993, we kinda already had a feel for where rock was headed... As of this moment in time, I can't see any kind of dominant movement in popular music. Not that it's a bad thing to have a lot of different things going on, but really, there's not much going on at all, if you ask me, and that Top 10 listing just confirms what I've been thinking.

Well, in terms of rock, I'll always identify the 90's with "grunge," but that's my biggest area of interest, so I'm a little biased.

In terms of popular music, there's a fairly good theory that we identify each decade with the music that was most prevalent at the end of it. Thus, the 80's was hair bands and Madonna. I think it's hard to say what we most see in the 90's. At least it is for me. Rap and teen pop were the biggest things, and I think rap is the larger of the two. I'd guess that in the future, we'll identify the 90's as the decade of rap.

I'm sure hoping something happens with rock. I still enjoy many bands still out there. Queens of the Stone Age/Mark Lanegan, The Hives/Vines/Strokes, Beck (sort of rock), and Audioslave. Then I'm sure there's a bunch of smaller groups I'm forgetting. If we're not getting a big, new movement, we at least still have some groups still doing their thing, some really well.

Eventually, I think rock will have to share a similar fate with jazz. There haven't been any big jazz movements in several decades, and if they have, they've been more cross-genre. At least that's how I see it.

The things I see (in Rock's future) are the garage band thing, which seems to be going nowhere; emo, the edges of which have been eking out a scant foothold for a while (Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182), but might yet get fuller; and the one on the horizon, some good power-pop-style stuff. I don't even have a good name for it yet, but there seem to be some good bands that are making lively pop music with rock sensibilities. I'm still trying to search this one down, though, so don't quote me on it; it's probably awfully closely related to the emo, so I could just be wrong.

Most of my purchases in the past year were from veteran artists who had new releases. U2, Suzanne Vega, The Pretenders, Santana, Tori Amos, etc. I don't think I bought a single album from a new artist this year, which is kinda sad. This is probably the first year that's happened, usually each year I find one or two new artists that jump out at me. No such luck this year.

Good point. I've bought several albums this year by new groups, but most of them have consisted of musicians who've been around for quite some time (like 15 years - QotSA, Audioslave), so that certainly is a sad thing. Then again, I don't listen to radio, so that probably shields me.

Bands that come to mind, unfortunately, aren't really new bands. The less emo-y side of Weezer and (related band) Chopper One come to mind, but there seems to be more of it out there.

Must be easy to record stuff at Budokan; I have a Cheap Trick concert issued on real CD from there, and bootlegs of 2 or 3 other groups including Journey (but not this show. Hmmm.)

Yeah Budokan must be some "I've made it" venue. Everyone seems to have a "Live at Budokan" album. This bootleg is from Dec 4 2001, and a VCD of the same night, or possibly Dec 5 exists from a Japanese TV broadcast. Awesome show, awesome sound, better than the DirecTV Freeview EC concert last month...
If I get XP to let EAC see my CD again, I'd be willing to offer them up for trade...

This is quite surprising to me. To all and sundry I profess that I am a classical music person, that I don't even like rock and roll. And yet 7 out of the top 10 most-frequently played songs are (by a loose definition I suppose -- I'm certainly no expert) rock songs.

And what is even more astonishing -- 6 of the 10 were either provided by or highly recommended by Tony Fabris. (I would like to note for the record that I did eventually purchase the CDs for every song Tony sent me!)

Judging by my experience here, I think that a lot of people on this bbs might be surprised to find out just what their top 10 frequency songs really are.

I'll go out on a limb and say that I LIKE Nickleback and Puddle of Mudd. Nickleback has 3 cd's out and I like them all and as for Puddle of Mudd, their debut cd was great. Neither of those songs listed are their best though.

I like many of the new bands and think they all have their own sound. Maybe the old rock is better but I get tired of the same groups over and over and look forward to the new stuff. Give them a chance.

My top played tracks list is a (constant) battle between techno and metal. The newest thing I found listed was Audioslave. I kind of miss the radio a little for hearing new stuff, but I know prolonged radio usage can result in repetitive stress disorder from hearing the same new songs over and over.

New isn't synonymous with bad to me, but I can't say a lot of "new" has really done anything for me. "Something More" from Train is the only thing at all recent I can think of that has made it onto my empeg.

I know this is a bit late in the conversation, but I think:

Rock is dying

The 90's will be remembered for grunge and teen pop, but the millennium will be remembered for hip-hop and RnB. It dominates the airwaves so much that it has even found its way into rock. Rap/Rock fusion is a direct response to the fact that hip-hop is taking over. Rock needs that fusion to survive.

As I see it, all musical "decades" never begin when they say they do. The 80's began sometime around like 82 or so and lasted until the last hair band shaved their heads; at like 1992. The 90's really started in like 92 or whenever grunge began to surface. And the 00's began in like 98 or so, when rock totally lost its directon and hip-hop's catchy hooks just snagged the entire american audience.

Yeah, you're right. Rock is dying. You must be right, since other people have been saying that very same thing for... Let's see.... Nearly 40 years, now.
