i'm planning to buy this from bgmicro so i can get gps on my empeg. unfortunately, i have very little electronic engineering experience (i can solder if i need to), and i took a look at the rs232 interface schematic and said forget doing this right now.

so i've resolved to either 1) take a crash course in EE at barnes and noble or 2) ask someone else to make the interface for me. if someone wants to offer, let me know.

Or you could just buy a different kind of GPS receiver, one with a standard RS232 serial connector, then you wouldn't need any special electronic interface, just a properly-wired connecting cable.

Let's just say that if you were planning to learn EE, then you should get cracking.

A friend of mine is going to work up interface boards this weekend and I'm going to pay to get a bunch etched. More on that after I know details.

Cool. Count me as interested. I have most of the components already and was going to try one in November after my current project ends, but it would sure be nicer to work on a a custom board. From the looks of it, something like this could mate up with both the Trimble or Encore boards, eh? (although personally, I'm going to try to build an enclosure to have power supply and GPS sit side by side to see if I can fit them under the back seat...)

"Oncore", and possibly.

I'll let my misspelling stand just to show I'm not unfallible!

I just looked. Mounting hole spacing on the long dimension looks about right, but the Oncore is a bit wider on the short dimension. That's just the physical part...

That thing is absolutely huge... I'll try to dust off my digital camera and make some pictures of how I put everything together.

Did this happen yet? Do you want me to work up a pcb design?

He already has a design, he was going to put it together so many could be etched on a single piece.

I'm away so I can't easily ask.
