Have you tried downloading the software again? With a utility like GetRight?
Which version of the software?

The md5sum for the 2.0b13 consumer MkII .upgrade file as I have it here ends in ...fdcc1853b9 .

(Note: I don't use the consumer version, but downloaded it the same time and by the same method as my (functional) developer version (md5sum ends in ....dec1fc773e) )

Any error messages during the installation of the software?

/Michael

Make sure that you are using the correct software for your player.

For instance, if you own a Mark1 player, the file must say "Car1" in the file name. If you own a Mark2 or a Rio Car player, it must say "Car2" in the file name.

Also, as was already suggested, grab the file again with GetRight.

Are you using a different version of Emplode than you are the player software? They both have to be the same. Just a guess.

The version of emplode shouldn't have anything to do with the player failing to start all by itself.

It is important that he be able to upgrade to a newer version, so that he can take advantage of all of the new features. I still recommend that he contact support on this subject.

Incidentally, empegteg67, in case you haven't already done so, please read through this FAQ entry, and give the rest of the FAQ a quick skim.
