Most of the music on my MKII is trance/techno livesets
that are very long, typically over 2 hours plus in lenth.
On a PC, it isn't a problem as media player as the cool
little slider to get me scrubbing around to where I want
to go.... but on the empeg, in my car no go. Scrubbing is
like a really big deal... especially through a huge file.

Is there anyway to work around these limitations while
allowing me to keep my eyes on the road where they need
to be??

Try a search on "gapless encoding."

Try using the "Seek Tool" info mode. In that info mode, the knob allows you to go forwards and backwards in a track.

I think it works faster than holding down the left/right buttons in the other modes.

Yeah, "Seek Tool" is what you want. It was made just for what you're trying to do.

Requirements for Seek Tool are:

- Version 2.0 software.

- If you want to be able to see the "song pattern" display as you're scrubbing, then the song must have been played through at least once to completion on the player so that it can store the profile image on the scratch partition.

It will still work without the song pattern on the screen, you just won't get the nifty display of loud and soft parts in the song.

I had no idea. I'm sticking to 1.03 right now while I'm working on getting all my CDs ripped... then I plan to go 2b11 and Hijack. I keep hearing about more and more great features in newer versions.

In your ripping, for fast forwarding through long tracks, you might be better off with CBR. VBR tends to have issues, especially if your encoder messes up (or omits completely, like mine) the Xing headers.

Don't wait! Go to 2b11 and hijack now. You will not regret it!

Fast forwarding isn't an issue for me. I don't have scores of long tracks like ravetek. But I have noticed the lack of the Xing tag with VBR, which I recently started using. But LAME claims that it must disable that tag in order for the --nogap switch to work properly, so I'm happy to make the trade-off. The only thing I see is that the empeg (and WINAMP) can't always correctly tell me the time (mm:ss) of the track that's playing. Slightly annoying, but not all that important to me.

Edit: As for upgrading to 2b11 and Hijack - I have heard about many great new features, but everyday I check the board there's always a new report about some bug or another, so I'm still just a little skeptical.

Dont worry about upgrading, I read all the stuff about it but I havn't had any problems, and the new features are worth it. Besides if you dont like the change or have problems you can always downgrade. I am the type of person that thinks if it's not broke don't fix it, but the new features were well worth it. I only had my empeg for a month then upgraded it, and I didn't even know what I was doing.

You only hear about the problems because this board would become useless with everyone was saying, "hijack and 2.0b11 are working perfectly fine today". Which is what I would be posting everyday. 2.0 beta 11 has been solid for me, Hijack development has really slowed down and is really stable for my day to day use.

I have run 2.0b11 since the day it came out, and I grab every hijack release as soon as I can, and I have no day-to-day issues. There are some small workarounds such as not sync-ing twice and not uploading many gigabytes in one session, but thaey are not a real issue.

And remember a worst case scenario just involves reloading version 1 again. Very easy.

I think he's very wise to get his ripping and uploading done before trying the beta software.
