question about upgrading hard disk

question about upgrading hard disk - 15/08/2006 18:26

I have the 60 GB Mark II. I believe there are two 30 GB hard drives in there. I just got a 100 GB drive that I'd like to use in there. Can I use it in conjunction with one of the 30 GB drives or do I have to use it solo? Just wondering if it matters that the drive capacities would be mismatched, so to speak. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Cheers.

It should not matter in almost all cases. There have been one or two instances where mismatches matter, but these are both extremely rare and very old. One thing you will probably need to do, though, is partition and format the new drive manually or use the upgraded builder software that Mark put together.

Oh dear. That looks a touch complicated. Am I better off trading this 100 GB drive in for a pair of 60 GB drives? Would I avoid having to go through those extra steps that way? Thanks for the tips!

I would follow the Drive Upgrade guide. But instead of applying the official Drive Builder Upgrade in step 6, use Mark's Builder which Paul linked. That should be the only change you need for this to successfully work. Just follow the steps word for word.

I'd like to make mark's upgraded builder software an official part of the disk upgrade guide. But I don't know the legality of doing so. Anyone care to comment?

If it's a problem, somebody stop me quick.

Edit: It is done.

Two 60 gig drives would require special-builder or extra steps as well, so, no, you're not better off.

The disk drive upgrade guide has now been updated to include a link to Mark Lord's special builder image. Thanks to Mark, it's now no more complicated to do big disks than it is little disks.
