Server backup

What do you folks recommend for server backups? I don't need mail, just file and SQL database backup. One of the most important requirements is that it have a decent UI. Their current one is nearly inscrutable. It took me forever to figure out how the backups were even set, and it still doesn't appear to be following the retention rules I've set so the space is filling up way too much...

What OS? At work we use Microsoft Data Protection Manager. Its UI is not good, but it's powerful enough and gets the job done.
