Can't find boot device

Can't find boot device - 09/10/2010 20:44

I have a Shuttle ST20G5. The PSU died so I hooked up a regular size ATX power supply to it to get it running. In the process of figuring out the PSU was dead I did the CMOS reset.

Now when I boot the computer can not find a boot device.

I have two drives one PATA and one SATA both show up in the BIOS. Windows is on the SATA drive. The BIOS is set to boot from HDD for all the boot devices you don't get to specify which one.

I booted into Ubuntu from a thumb drive and both drives show up in there and I can see files on both drives.

I am guessing this is something simple I am missing.

I'm guessing it's probably a SATA controller mode setting that needs to be changed, probably as a setting between native SATA mode and IDE emulation mode. The other possibility is "Hard Disk Boot Priority".

You were right there was as HDD boot priority setting thanks !

Windows install must have got borked anyway I am to the start windows normally / last know good config prompt then it locks no matter which option I pick. Probably need to reinstall I guess.

Instead of a reinstall, try a Windows repair. When you boot from the installation disc, you should get an option somewhere to repair a Windows installation.

When I tried hitting R for repair it just gave me a command prompt.

Go check what Tom suggested about the SATA interface mode before trying anything else.

That was probably the recovery console. Not the same thing. I think it might be one step further ahead. Can't remember and don't have a way to check right now.

Tom was right after I changed that I was getting my original windows install coming up but it was crashing while trying to boot. Before changing that I was just getting no boot device found from the BIOS.

I just did a reinstall. I have all my files on a seperate drive so it's not too big of a deal just reinstalling all the programs is annoying. Expecially Picassa because it ends up downloading all the files from my web albums to get them in sync with my local files. I just need to get past wanting a local copy and trust uncle Google with my files smile

Now I just need to do something about the Shuttle power supply.

I do remember seeing what you are talking about but I did not see it this time. Maybe it matters how you start the install ? I was doing it with a really old version of XP with the SATA drivers slip streamed in there and booting from the cd. I could have just been not seeing it this time too.

No. There is another setting that usually says what mode you have the SATA controller in. Native mode or IDE emulation. Windows won't like it if you have to in a different setting to how you had it when you originally installed and you won't be able to boot like how you experienced.

You've reinstalled anyway so bit late now smile

I will look for that setting so I know where it is in the future. That was probably it because I did the CMOS reset I suppose it changed that. Oh well a reinstall never hurts smile
