Any X B O X Mod Fans? - 17/02/2006 13:04

First of all if this doesn't belong feel free to delete.
Secondly I typed it with spaces to avoid getting websearch traffic here.

I recently acquired a box, installed a chip and installed X b o x media center on it and I love it.

Does anyone here have any good tips or suggestions on how to make it better and a little more usable?

One of my biggest peeves is when going to "My Videos". In order to view the videos I have on my PC I have to dig through a bunch of levels before I get to my shared folder. Is there any way to add a "shortcut" to that folder?

I've looked around the net but there's so many forums on this stuff with a high noise ratio that it becomes a pain to dig for too long.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated and for anybody looking at a media center pc type of solution I think you should look into this setup... it's just wonderful!

Thanks!

Edit your .xml file to point to the directory on the network location for the videos shortcut.

Code:

<!-- my video shares !-->
<video>
<bookmark>
<name>My video share on my pc</name>
<!-- you can use the following formats: !-->
<!-- smb://domain;user:password@ip/share/directory/ !-->
<!-- smb://user:password@ip/share/ !-->
<!-- if guest/public access is enabled: !-->
<!-- smb://ip/ !-->
<path>smb://username:password@MyMachineWIthVideos/my/movie/path</path>
</bookmark>
</video>

Or press white on the shortcut in xbmc under the videos section to edit it using the osd.

If you dont have a current build get one. DVD menu support was released to general public a few months ago and it works fairly well. Shoutcast is fun too.

I got the current one from about two weeks ago. I was quite impressed when dvd menus worked over the network.

I only have dial-up access at home so shoutcast probably wouldn't be so much fun for me.

There are many other good homebrew apps . Most are emulation stuff and tools.

If you dont have the xbox remote you should get one as it really helps with the media center experience.

You probably want to set a default location as well, like:

Code:
<video>
<default>smb://your_fileserver/videos_share/</default>
[...the rest of your video bookmarks here...]
</video>

That way when you go to 'My Videos' it just goes straight to that folder on the network. Handy. You can still use the buttons to go elsewhere.

I got the remote when I bought the unit from my cousin. It really is nice. I used another cousins box before with the controllers and I really didn't like it... though I am finding some missing functionality when using the remote... i.e. the left and right shoulder button for ff and rew, as well as the white button features that seem to pop up a lot.

My cousin with the other modded box got me into this. He's coming home tonight and is probably staying with us as he goes out with my fiancees sister. Hopefully he'll get me a little better acquainted with the deeper functions of the box as he's been playing with his for a year now.

Thanks for the tips!

You can edit keymap.xml to add or change functionality.

I have tried the following, with no luck:

<path>smb://mshome/John-24A3AF0D1A/My Videos</path>

or

<path>smb://192.168.0.2/mshome/John-24A3AF0D1A/My Videos</path>

can you tell where I have gone wrong? there is no username/password set.

Try dropping the mshome. Workgroup shouldn't be necessary.
