G4 Cube 450mhz/320mb/DVD-Rom/10.2.4/Rage 128 replaced with a Fanless Radeon and 7200rpm 30gb Hard drive is also an upgrade from the stock drive. Hopefully it will also get one of the G4 upgrades here shortly, all depends on my spare cash fund.

I also plan on picking up a laptop sometime soon. Still kicking myself for missing out on a 500mhz/256mb/20gb Pismo in excellent condition for $700.

If anyone's looking to throw away a 17" PowerBook, I've got a trashcan just the right size over here.

Justin, just out of curiosity. Since you say you use your pc on a regular basis - why is that? And what system are you running on your iBook?

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 17/02/2003 12:15

For your benefit, I regularly use Windows, OpenBSD, Linux, MacOS X, and Solaris.

If I was forced to choose only one for a desktop OS, I'd probably go with MacOS X (not that I don't have a few problems with it here and there).

I use Windows because I've got a PC that my wife uses and she's a sloooooow computer learner. Trying to teach her to use a new OS would be seriously painful. (She still barely understands how to work the TiVo despite using nearly every day for two years.) Once I get a new desktop workstation, I hope to retire that machine to her and she can Windows it up all she wants. I also use Windows for a few particular applications -- games and XNews. I need to find a news client I like under some other OS.

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 17/02/2003 12:38

Machines that I use on a regurlar basis...

Beige G3/266 upgraded to G4/500, Radeon 7000, 7200 RPM 40 Gig HD, 640Megs RAM, bus overclocked to 83Mhz, etc, etc
Bondi Blue iBook 300
Yikes G4 Tower 350Mhz, 700 and something megs RAM (Work)

Machines that collect dust in my closet...

Powermac 6100/66
Powermac 6100/60
Mac SE/30
Mac SE/30
Mac LC 2
Mac LC

Machine used as a monitor stand

Mac IICi

As you can tell I am not very good at getting rid of old computers. I had a couple of 386s that I finally disposed of last time I moved, but you never know when you might want an old SE/30 to turn into a fishtank or something. There are also a few PCs (running linux or FreeBSD) and a NeXT cube floating around here somewhere.

Wow! Impressive collection! Are any of your original mac cases the kind with the signatures from the mac development team? I vividly remember palying Dark Castle many-a-time on an SE/30.

flatscreen iMac
pismo powerbook

however, I mostly use them for testing -- Until the Eclipse IDE gets more performance improvements on the Mac, I do most of my devel on Windows.

PowerMac dual 867Mhz, 1.25GB, 140GB, 10.2.4 and dual 17" LCD monitors. Bought it about three weeks before Apple discontinued it and dropped the price of the dual 1.25Ghz model to the same price. Grr.

PowerBook G4 400Mhz, 640MB, 40GB, 10.2.4. Soon to be replaced by a 12" PB G4 if I can sell it.

Plus a collection of older machines, long since retired and put into storage: PowerBook G3 233, PowerMac 4400, Quadra 700 (upgraded to a 50Mhz PPC 601!), pair of PowerBook Duos - 280c and 280, IIcx, SE/30, LC and an SE.

Umm, I think so but it has been so long since I pulled any of them apart that I am not sure. I think that the SE/30s and IICi probably all do.

Any mac users post here with what you've got.

Plus 128, complete with no-cursor-keys keyboard

Actually I haven't even powered it up for years -- but I still think booting the OS and running Microsoft Word all from one floppy disc is very cool.

I repeat, if you really want to get a good head count, make a poll. There are A LOT of people who don't post often, but I bet they'd respond to a poll.

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 18/02/2003 13:10

I appreciate the poll making. I initially thought a poll would be nice - but a rather impersonal way to gather info. I was aiming to create a discourse in line with what people posted about their macs - or lack of macs. But a poll is nice, too!

*I was also secretly hoping to get quite a bit of non-mac user feedback about the topic. You know - the ol' TASTES GREAT/LESS FILLING kinda thing*

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 18/02/2003 13:26

Hehe, I see. Well nothing says you can't respond to a poll with your opinion. Just look at this

Okay, I'm not a Mac user. Here's my reason: it just doesn't feel right to me.

We can debate the differences in platforms till the cows come home. Subjectivity isn't debatable. I've used Macs enough to know I don't like it. Same with Linux.

The other reason is familiarity. It may seem like a lame reason, but since my progression through several DOS versions and through Win3.11, 95, 98, and 2K, I'm not really up to converting to linux now. The way I see it, I put up with the crappy Windows OS's. Now that I'm with a stable version, I'm not going to switch!

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 18/02/2003 14:16

Aren't all G4 PowerBooks Titanium ones? (I don't have a Mac in front of me right now in order to run MacTracker. The Apple Museum would seem to confirm that, though, I think.)

Perhaps I should have just said ``PowerBook G4'' instead of ``Ti PowerBook''. Can't edit it now, though.
Posted by: trs24

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 18/02/2003 14:22

Yes - "Ti Powerbook" is synonymous with "powerbook G4." Although - if you want to get technical - the new 17" and 12" powerbooks are made of aluminum; so, they would be Al books.

Justin, just out of curiosity. Since you say you use your pc on a regular basis - why is that? And what system are you running on your iBook

i typically stay in os x Jag. I really just use the system for work related stuff, and use final cut pro and dvd studio and i use it when im in bed. I love macs and what they do but i seem so much less productive on them over all. Ive been a pc user my whole life and even after the switch which really opened my eyes to them. I just cant use it for my primary system. Part of it could be bcuase its a laptop.

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 18/02/2003 19:06

So, just out of curiosity - again... (and maybe a poll could be formulated). For mac users or non mac users alike, how do you use your mac - or why don't you use a mac - in a development environment.

As much of a mac guy as I am - I actually only use my mac for graphic design and not for programming. I am rather dissatisfied with the terminal app in os x and wish it had better color environment control (especially for emacs). But I prefer my mac for using apps like fireworks and photoshop much more so than my pc

k, discuss on...

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 18/02/2003 20:47

I guess still having a Apple ][e doesn't count since this is a Mac poll? I do technically have a Mac Classic though but it doesn't work. The Molex connector on the yoke decided to have a melt down and I shelved it because I couldn't be bothered to find the proper replacement part. I temporarily fixed it by reconnecting the lead with some really fat croc clips but that wasn't quite ideal from the whole don't-accidently-electrocute-yourself point of view.
I never really used it much. It just sat around collecting dust until one day it didn't start up properly. I think It's somewhere in my garage at the moment...

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 03/03/2003 17:43

I'm a little late to the game on this but...
Pismo 500 (thinking about a G4 upgrade in it) and a Flatscreen iMac...and a few beige boxes in the basement somewhere.

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 04/03/2003 11:11

Pismo 500 (thinking about a G4 upgrade in it)

You may want to consider the 800 mhz G3 upgrade for the Pismo. It should result in a slightly faster all around laptop instead of adding Altivec and gaining decent peformance gains in only a few applications.
Posted by: unsquare

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 04/03/2003 11:53

I might consider that! Who sells it?
I would be torn though...as the apps that I would want the upgrade for all use Altivec.
Posted by: drakino

Re: Mac Users Unite! - 04/03/2003 12:36

Powerlogix sells the upgrade directly, as you have to ship them your existing CPU module for them to peform the upgrade. Click the link in the above page, and the order link is down near the bottom.

G4 500 is $299, G3 800 is $399.
