Can anyone recommend an X Server that works on XP please? Preferably something with a 30-day eval. period or, even better, free

I used to use eXceed from Hummingbird. It was pretty good. Not cheap, though. You can get an eval copy from the page I linked to.

These days, I just use VNC, though.

XWin32

It has a 30-day full-feature eval period, after which it's still full-featured, but you can only run it for a few hours at a time, IIRC. I'm using it right now and the only problem I have with it is that I can't figure out how to start it without it asking me if I want to conncet via XDMCP or rshell. A cancel-click every once in a while isn't a big problem, though.

Doesn't VNC only have 256 colors available? I can run most vendors tools over VNC and work from home, but the important one won't because it requires more colors than VNC can provide. (Cadence Design Systems tools) I need Exceed for that, and that damn thing screws up my XP everytime I try to install it... Can't uninstall Exceed after that because it disables the RPC... Worked fine under 98 on version 6 I think it was.

VNC actually doesn't have a 256 color option as you'd think of it. It definitely supports more colors, and the low-color version has a static colormap (BGR233, IIRC). Progue around in your VNC client and you should find an option to select different color depths.
