ID3 Tags - 30/01/2002 23:14

I am using MP3.Tag Studio to tag my MP3 files on my computer yet when I upload a song to my Rio Car player all of the fields (Title, Artist, etc.) all appear in the "Title" field of the details screen. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This site has been a wealth of information!

have you checked what the id3v1 and id3v2 tags are set for I think if both are present it uses the v2 tag

Re: ID3 Tags - 30/01/2002 23:58

Yeah, if you have both the empeg will only use the v2 tags. MP3 Tag Studio can be sorta tricky about when it writes to what v. of tag, so make sure when you are in the Browse tab that each song only has the v2 (or only v1 if you prefer) tag. You can just do a "mass clean up tags" to remove one or the other.

i liek to stick with all v1 tags.. its cleaner as its more of a standard

Then you'd better delete the v2 tags from your tracks -- emplode will ignore v1 tags if the v2 tags are present.

And besides, v2 _is_ a standard. Just not a particularly good one.

Re: ID3 Tags - 31/01/2002 07:05

I don't care how standardized it is... because I'm the only one who uses my mp3's. So, as long as my editor (I use the one that comes with MusicMatch after some bad Winamp experiences) and the empeg work together, I don't care. Hell, some band names like "My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult" don't even FIT on V1 tags.

Yeah, i'm in the process of "v2ifying" my entire 60GB collection right now because of name lengths and so i can add year and release label info to the comments tag. I've been at it for a week and i'm half way thru the B's. This could take a while....

release label? hmm.... Would be nice to be able to search by "waxtrax" or "sub pop" or "4AD".

I use the one that comes with MusicMatch

Have you used the new Super tagging feature in MM 7.0? It's pretty slick especially when you pull the tracks off compilation albums and want to know the original album info/year/etc. I was pleasntly surprised when I saw that upgrade.

Re: ID3 Tags - 31/01/2002 11:00

Actually, it is MM7.0, but that one feature is absoluely useless to me! You'd think that 01_nine inch nails_head like a hole.mp3 would bring back only "head like a hole" listings by NIN (off of comps or whatever) but it never does.... I haven't had any luck with it. Maybe there is a new version?

Wow. What is everyone's problem with ID3v2? I think it's a remarkably good standard. It's main drawback is lack of support for second-tier frames, which is hardly the standard's fault.

Re: ID3 Tags - 31/01/2002 12:37

I would keep the v2 tags. first I deleted the v2 tags so the v1 tags would be used in emplode then many of the song titles were cut off

Re: ID3 Tags - 31/01/2002 12:38

Is this the problem you're having?

Another possibility is that you're simply renaming the files rather than tagging them. If the tags are empty, it will just put the file name in the title field.

Re: ID3 Tags - 31/01/2002 12:53

That's what I'm saying.... ID3v1 is utter crap.

Re: ID3 Tags - 31/01/2002 13:25

Agreed, and absolutely not sufficient enough to contain my -very often- long tracknames.
I've never used ID3v1 for that reason.
I've been using Mp3's for years now, but by the time I actually started to clean them up and fill in their tags properly, ID3v2 was available.
I have no idea why someone would prefer V1 over V2. Maybe only when this person is using an older portable player that doesn't recognise V2

And then there are those that are maintaining that all tags, V1 or V2 are a bad idea. http://users.belgacom.net/gc247244/noid3.htm -Aaron

Loren, I hope you're not manually editing every piece of V2 tag data. Use MP3Tag Studio to do a V1 to V2 copy and that should get you off to a good start. Then you only have to worry about the diffs.

Re: ID3 Tags - 31/01/2002 18:32

oh hell no...haha. I'm definitely using MP3 Tag Studio. It's fast, but still slow going when you have this much music. I'm also running into files with bad tags every once and a while that i have to strip and fix which slows things down. The most time consuming part is just looking up all the years and labels in allmusic.com and interpunk.com, and fixing any mis-spellings or punctuations that existed before. The rest goes pretty quick. I do a v1->v2 copy, mass clean up to remove v1, then mass set year, genre, and label in the comment field.
