car serial output problems

car serial output problems - 06/12/2003 21:24

I am having trouble getting serial info out of the Empeg when I put it in forced DC/car mode. I am running V2.00 and Hijack V3.40. My config.ini has the following
[hijack]
suppress_notify=0
[output]
notify=1

When in AC mode I receive track/time data at 115,200 but when in forced DC mode I receive the boot up data at 115,200 then no more output.

Still confused on the whole process, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right, because in the car it deliberately changes to 4800. Please click here for the relevant FAQ entry and corrective measures.

right, I read that section and tried looking for data at 4800 but nothing would come out after the initial boot up data. Would it be coming out the back of the empeg itself or the serial cable on the sleeve? I have not tried the serial cable on the sleeve, if this is the case is there any way get it at the back of the empeg also (for in home use?)

Tony, I was just thinking a little more, if the in car data does come out the sleeve port only is there a way to change the baud rate of the port on the Empeg itself when it is in the house on AC mode? If I could change that port then I could easily use it in the house for development work, otherwise I will have to try and access the sleeve port in the house without a sleeve attached.

Thanks much, Nick

huh?

The serial port on the sled and the one on the empeg itself are the same port. The sled port however is wired differently, the lines are swapped so you have to use a straight-through cable instead of the null-modem cable you get in the box.

Oh, ok. Well if that's the case then I must have something set wrong in my config. If I force DC power mode and set up a terminal program to read at 4800 I get the following when I reboot.

޿ J ,ǩ/,BO:jÔ9|*6
*;"Ct+ʭ+)  +c㹇cmJ'}   O
f޾(({)BnjK)kC/Jbjy BՑrate: 4800, disabling logging

The garbage at the beginning is the Linux startup data at 115200 then I see "rate: 4800, disabling logging"
This must be turning off the data output, how do I turn it back on? My config.ini is

[hijack]
suppress_notify=0
[output]
notify=1

Add this to config.ini and try it again

[serial]
car_rate=115200

Hey Trevor,
I added that to the config and still no luck. I did discover that it will output data at 115200 just fine but if I change the baud rate is comes up with the following disable message.

冇b!9Ցrate: 57600, disabling logging

This is the message I received at 57600, I also tried 4800 with the same result. It does work at 115200 but that is all I can get out of it.

Very confused, Nick

Re: car serial output problems - 07/12/2003 11:28

The player internally disables logging when it's in DC mode. I don't think there is a way to fix that apart from making Hijack force it to AC mode even when in the car. Read this thread.

I guess I don't understand why it works at 115200 but no other baud rate when on forced DC mode.
All I really want is a way to have the empeg output song information at 38400 or possibly 19200 when in the car. Is there any way you can think of to make this happen?

Re: car serial output problems - 07/12/2003 11:55

The player is doing it. We can't change that unfortunately. I guess you could hack the kernel to change the baud rate behind the player's back. So it'd think it was running at 115200 but actually was set to 19200.

Well thats too bad. Thanks for your help Trevor.
What is the purpose of the serial port in the car if you can't get the track, title, mode, volume info out of it?
What is everyone using this port for when it is set to 4800 or something like that?

GPS. NMEA runs at 4800 baud. That's one.

What is being done with NMEA, are you showing gps data on the Empeg display?

Look at gpsapp.

It's an old request from ages ago for the eventual development of a navigation system. It might have been put in as early back as the beta days with the Mark 1 (I can't remember offhand). And noone has seen any reason to take it back out, since the serial speed can be set via config.ini.

Ok, I see. The GPS app looks interesting. Thanks for the help everyone.
