About a week ago QuakeLive.com went offline due to a DDoS attack.

There has been some discussion of this on the internet, but nothing more recent than January 30. Are they still down, or is it just me?

The site is up for me, fast and responsive. I didn't try playing a game or logging in.

Okay... when I enter www.quakelive.com into the address bar of my browser (Firefox), it says down at the bottom "Connecting to QuakeLive.com..." for 60 seconds and then I get the "Connection was reset" dialog.

So, why can't I connect to QuakeLive.com, and how can I fix it?

Network connectivity is a black art to me, totally incomprehensible, so if you give me instructions on what to do, please make sure they are at a kindergarten level. No, wait, those kindergarteners are a lot more computer savvy than I am these days, make it at a level your grandmother would understand! smile

I wonder if they are limiting international connections?

Happy Birthday!

Doug: Can you point to a US based proxy and try that to see if it works?

My internet failed completely a couple hours ago - no connection, no VOIP phone, even though the lights on the cable modem indicated everything was OK. Service was restored an hour later, and everything worked again... INCLUDING QUAKELIVE.COM

Do you suppose my ISP fixed something that made quakelive.com start working again?

Sounds like the logical explanation. The only other possibility I can think of is a router that is giving intermittent trouble, but it doesn't seem too likely at this point. If this recurs with any regularity, you can look at that option.

Probably not, because QuakeLive.com was the only site giving me any kind of problem.

If they were having a DDoS, they might have played with some routing table entries specific to their servers. An entry may have cached too long in a router, and then refreshed on a router reboot.

Before being assimilated into SBN, my brother's site was attacked. After repelling it - no idea of the specifics, but it did involve temporary routing entries - they returned routing to normal. The site still wasn't available from a bunch of ISPs, though (for me, vzw yes but comcast no). It took some sort of manual intervention to get the route update out - after way too many phone calls...

Not necessarily. I had problems a while back accessing MSDN and PlayStation Network -- and only those; everything else that I tried was fine.

Turned out to be bust caps in the router.
