Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.

Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, [email protected]. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.

We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

Gabe

That blew around LucasArts like lightening this morning. Sad man, sad. I bet there are some really heavy heads over at Valve. Damn shame. I'm shocked they haven't made a bigger stink about it... like "Hey, we contacted the FBI" or something. I guess they don't want to draw more attacks.

Yep. All the more reason to not be running Windows. Developing a game for Windows requires it, of course.

Why, oh why wouldn't you have at least one firewall? Or just completely remove the development machines onto their own network with no Internet access. I don't claim to be the most security conscious person in the world, but all of my development related machines are segmented from the rest of the network and not connected to the Internet at all.

I show my "out of touch"ness by asking: "wtf is HL2?"

I can't follow the link because it's /.ed or something. I'll guess it's a game.

Best comment I've seen about this so far, was a guy on the Blue's News forum thread talking about the Source engine licensing and made the side-comment "What an ironic name, now..."

I can't imagine any game companies actually being spineless enough to get the source and use any of the tech Valve came up with for their own games, or even for educational purposes. That would be pretty damn low... especially since one would think that those in the business would understand how much blood and sweat went into that stuff.

I guess it'll happen though. But i don't think it will really hurt their licensing.

F ucking Lame.

OK. So now, everyone should go out and buy a copy when it comes out to support them. I know a lot of us were going to anyway, but still. I might just buy more than one.

i think thats bordering on ridiculous. money lost from this will prolly be minimal. its an old build and noone would in their right mind use the engine for anything publicly released. and its not like someone that has this source has cost valve the 50 bucks for the game. it doesnt run, and its got no content. its a great intellectual loss though.

BUT, it will more than likeley mean more delays in the release... which means more lost revenue in dev costs.

[plug]Speaking of delayed games... Gladius got approval from MS, Nintendo, and Sony a couple days ago... all within 24 hours of each other. [/plug]
