Greetings!

In recognition for all of the work he has done with this BBS (and others), a number of people on the board are trying to gather enough cash to send Tom to Amersfoort this year. You can contribute to this cause by sending a PayPal directly to him at d_checkpaypal @ miniinfo.net (no credit cards at this account). Use d_creditcard @ miniinfo.net for any credit card payments. (Verification on this account is pending, but can accept payments now) See this thread for some background information. Thanks!!!

Edit: I would like to also add a big Thank You to Cris Matthews, who came up with the idea for this project on the RioCar.org site.

- Edit by Drakino to add the credit card payment method

Cheers Paul!

I've made a small start, I figure if we all give a small amount we should even get enough money to send Tom home too

Tom - Let us know how the fund is going from time to time.

Cheers

Cris.

Greetings!

I have had a request from someone asking if there was a way to contribute anonymously. PayPal does not (to my knowledge) directly support this. What I will offer (and have done for this individual) is to accept the PayPal to my account and then forward it on appropriately. If you are interested in doing this kind of anonymous contribution, please PM or email me in advance. Thanks!

Not to be a pessimist, but what happens to the cash if the target isn't met?

It'd be nice to see a totaliser like the Get Justin To Africa Fund. They are always good to get people to donate.

Hmm... I don't know. That is up to Tom. Perhaps he could get a Karma or a disk / hardware upgrade for his empeg...

I was hoping to go this year in any case, so the money I do get will be used to help pay for the trip.

I'll start posting totals here in a day or so. Not sure on airfare yet, still deciding how to get there, and for how long. I may try to visit some other areas of Europe as well.

Status report: $585 so far (thanks guys very much for this)

I added a credit card payment address in the post above. For those who didn't see it, use d_creditcard @ miniinfo.net to send any Credit Card based payments to me. The account shows unverified right now, but should show as Perilith Server Division. It's my account to avoid the fees on the main account.

Now, if only we can find an administrator who can make this thread "sticky" or move it to the Announcements forum...

Administrators are like London buses on this site (Rightly and necessarily so) they're red and ten come past when you don't need them, none when you do!

I wouldn't quite say that. For some reason, this article seems to be at the top of the general listing, even though there are articles with newer postings. I think someone quietly set the flag and wandered off...

No worries - I forgot the smiley. I suspect that it is sticky. Of course, bumping up the thread every now and again doesn't hurt either...

New total, $1023. Incredable guys, thank you for all of this. I am still working out my exact plans now, I am going to try to turn this into a two week vacation and see Germany and such.

Need to go get my passport, forgot mine wasn't valid for 10 years since I got it as a minor.

Thanks to most of the Eurpoean countries switching to the euro, it should make things much easier to travel around

No borders over there, either. Europe really is a single country in that respect. Only the language changes when moving around.

Cheers

Mainly bad language in my bit, but that's Yorkshire for you!

By the way, have we gathered enough for a round trip ticket yet? I think we are close.

Right now it definitly looks like it. Total at this point is $1177, and checking round trip prices, that is right where it needs to be for me. I'm still planning out a larger vacation around this, so any extra will be used for a EuroRail pass.

You know I have a good friend that works with Eurail. I'm pretty sure I can get you a couple of complimentary passes.

EuroRail pass

Checkout your itinerary against the single trip fares before buying the pass, as far as I know thry're on most rail company sies on the net. Unless things have changed since my youth, you've really got to do some travelling before the pass becomes more economical.

That would be really handy. I should have my final plans in a week. Germany is high on my list of places. Anyone have any other suggestions for a 1.5 to 2 week vacation? I've seen Scotland (highlands area), and London before.

Again a bit of culture that doesn't translate. There is a certain stereotype in British humour about belgium being one of the most boring places in the world. This figures in a number of Monty Python sketches, and I seem to remember that Douglas Adams used it as a rude word...

Nah. In real life, that's Luxembourg.

and I seem to remember that Douglas Adams used it as a rude word...

In the US version of the book, it's Belgium. In the UK version it's f*ck. I can't recall what's in the radio show, if anything.

The radio show has belgium: Zaphod says it when falling out of the statue of the cup, on the shoe planet. The book doesn't do most of the shoe planet material, but the belgium speech got put in the US version for the bit at the flying party where the actress has just won the Rory award for the most gratuitous use of the word {f*ck,belgium} in a serious screenplay.

You can always take a ride with me to Sweden (If I make it to the gathering). Could be a little different trip for you. :-)

If you want shopping/nightlife then Växjö(were I live) isnt much for you, but I could drop you off in Malmö or travel some more miles to Gothenburg or Stockholm.
