Downloading now... Hopefully it's a recovery from the debacle that was v3...

I like one of their key selling points for the new version:

"Most things actually work!"

It does pepper some AOL crap around. Several Icons & an AOL installer (which you can just delete from the \winamp directory. The media library is silly fast.

I've been running Winamp 5 beta 2 for a about a month now and almost forgot that it wasn't Winamp 2

As always, you can choose not to install the AOL crap by doing a Custom install and de-selecting the relevant options.

Well, so far it's ruined my ability to play video files in Winamp, crashes every time it tries. Reverting back to 2.91 hasn't fixed it, either. It probably registered some "new and improved" version of a shared library or something. Argh.

I think I'll be sticking with 2.x for the moment. On my PII300 Winamp 5.0 consumes 80% of CPU just playing back MP3s. It doesn't really seem to add any new features that I need either.

How do you get winamp 2 back? it appears to have eaten it and the old classic.winamp.com doesn't work any more.

80%? Huh. I've got a PIII600 and it was running about 3% to 5% playing .mp3's. The only new feature I care about is the improved library. If you don't need that, I'd say yeah, stick with 2.x .

Ah yes. I think I have worked out what is wrong. I was playing with Shoutcast a while back in Winamp 2.0, it looks like Winamp 5.0 has decided to run Shoutcast somewhere in the background.

Yikes! Hope that's not on purpose. In the meantime, www.oldversion.com has it.

Screw winamp 5, I'm going to start using 0.20 instead! Much simpler and definitely not as CPU intensive.

I appreciate trying it out for me guys. Based on what I have heard here, I think I will stick with 2, thank you very much.

Dude, don't laugh, when WinAMP 0.20 first came out we were all using MuseARC or WinPlay3. WinAMP 0.20 was like a godsend!

The first version of winamp I had was around the 1.00 mark. I think the first mp3 I had was Pinball Wizard by the Who.
