Computer it ain't.

dumb terminal it is.

As far as I can tell this is a Altos 'model five' Dumb Terminal.

Haven't seen one of those for 17+ years.

I used to work for a company that imported & sold Altos equipment including these things.

It was a greenscreen/dumb terminal that could emulate a VT220 terminal (as well the Altos emulation which was similar to the VT220 emulation I recall).

This terminal would have been designed to be used on either the Altos 586 or 986 multi-user computers running Xenix (Microsofts 80's attempt to dominate the Unix market).
Altos computers were based on the 8086 processor and were common in the mid to late 1980's.

Ahh, interesting! I thought it might be useless to me But oh well. Given that it was 25 cents, I didn't think it was too bad

I picked this up at my church's flea market, along with a $12.50 turntable/radio/8 track player! It's so cool

Well, you could always hook it up as a terminal to the empeg, if you didn't like the way hyperterminal works and wanted a dedicated station...

Make sure you encode those 8-tracks at 320 kb/s so you don't lose any of the 8-track format's high fidelity...

OH Wow! Those things are sweet! I wish I could show you guys the 300 baud acoustic coupler terminal me and a buddy found dumpster diving when we were teenagers. It just so happened that he had a Bell style phone that acoustically coupled. We figured out how to configure it, and it took an AT command set even! It was pretty sweet...

Woo! I used to hang out on the altger munich X.25-connected chatsystem (along with a lot of the Chaos Computer Club) back in the late 80s... brings back memories...
