Can I buy just the wire harness plug?

Out of the box, my wire harness plug on the back of the sled had a few wires which had some of the bare wire exposed. It looked like some had peeled some of the insulation back, starting at the plug. To be more specific it was the rca wires for the Aux and Rear speaker line out wires. I figured I’d just wrap them up with some electrical tape and be done with it. Well, I guess some of the wire itself was gone too. Now I getting a bad connection . I was wondering if I can order just the wire harness plug? Or maybe someone has a sled I could buy?

The sled plug is make by Hirose, and isn't really sold to hobbyists. I've been meaning to try and track them down and see if they could be ordered in quantitys of 20 or something, as I suspect many people would want one or two for home docking sleds or other projects. If your docking sled is just out of the box, contact support and they will sovle all your problems.
You can search for the exact model number, one of the empeg guys posted it when I asked. QR/P6 comes to mind, but I'm not sure.

I tried to order a lot one time too, (like over a year ago). It's a QR/P6 24 way plug, ISTR that the housing and pins were separate part numbers. I talked with someone at Hirose who said he couldn't do orders as small as I wanted (I think I was trying 10 or 20), and to see if digikey carried that part. Then I tried digikey, and they didn't seem to have it. I went ahead and bought another sled.

BTW: Do we want AWG#14-16 or AWG#18-24 gauge power connectors? I have a distributor here who may be willing to sell them to me in low volume.
Also I am assuming that the terminals on the sled are the "female" and those on the empeg itself are the "male" ones. That's what they look like from the datasheet without pulling a sled or an empeg apart. Am I correct?

AWG#18-24 power connectors; yes, the one on the sled is the female. (WRONG)
Edit: /me slaps himself with a salmon. hmm, the one on the sled is male, yes. never answer these posts without first sleeping some.

I think you'll find the connector on the Empeg itself is the female, and whats in the sled is the male.
[This is from looking at the PDF document from the manufacturer - link to this is posted earlier in the thread].

I'm not talking about the plastic connector. I know the empeg has the "female" plastic housing and the sled is the "male" plastic housing.
I'm talking about the terminals and I am quite sure from looking at the empeg and the datasheet, that the terminals on the on empeg and ..... Forget about it.
I just realised that I was looking at the empeg instead of the sled when I picked order codes for the terminals.
So it's male plastic connector and male terminals on the sled...full stop end of sentence.
According to my calculations we want these bits for a sled connector...
QR/P6-24P-C(01) Male Housing
QR/P1-PC1A-111 Male Power Terminal
QR/P1-PC2A-111 Male Signal Terminal
and that's what I'm getting quoted on

?!!?!! We were getting severely ripped off by our suppliers, it would seem. Hmm. Oh well, rather late to do anything about that now...
The pins are spectacularly expensive, though, considering you need 24 of them to populate a connector...
You may want to crimp these carefully by hand though, as the special tool costs $742 for one type of pin and $587 for the other

Hmmmm I got a message from the BBS saying that lopan had replied and said In reply to:
Shonky, the digikey links seem to have expired? Is there anyway to post the actual digikey part numbers?
However that message seems to have disappeared from the BBS and it reports an error when I click on the link. Anyhoo you can just do a search for "QR/P1" and "QR/P6" and it will find them real easy for you.
Digikey part #'s are:
H10109-ND - QR/P6-24P-C(01) Male Housing
H10085-ND - QR/P1-PC1A-111 Male Power Terminal
H10087-ND - QR/P1-PC2A-111 Male Signal Terminal
Edit : And they look like pretty ordinary crimps. Until I see them I can't see why a fairly normal crimper couldn't do it. I have crimped stuff like this before with just pliers no problem. I was planning on soldering them as well anyway.

what exactly does one need to buy & put together
to make one of these harness, plug things work.
I am going to make a home docking station,
and it would be incredibly handy to have a sled style interface
so that the unit plugs in like it does in the car.
Unfortunately, I missed the last of the docking stations.
and this'll probably be cheaper.

Basically the three parts I listed plus a sled/slide-in bracket of some sort. You'd need 2 power terminals and 22 signal terminals.
Since digikey list the product you may be able to buy from them although they list a MOQ of 10 for most parts and according to the data sheets, the terminals come in packs of 100 or strips of 3000-5000.

Well I am going to have a go at Digikey, but since they say everything is to be backordered I don't like my chances. Perhaps a group buy of greater numbers might influence them.
I am expecting them to come back to me and say "sorry that part isn't available"
For only a set of two you could buy them yourself. The only extras you would have to buy is to buy 10 power terminals instead of 4 (61c each) and 50 signal terminals instead of 44 (38c each) to satisfy their MOQ. Would work out to US$31.69 + shipping for two sets. You'd have some spares too then...
Personally I am trying for 3 sets right now.

Well I placed an order for 3 sets which came to US$42 + shipping (apparently will be US$18 + US$6 because it's international - geez it's rough living in down here in Australia ).
I guess I'll have to wait and see if it comes through. I will keep you guys posted.

If I'm not mistaken, you would only need to wire 19 signal terminals as the headlight, remote and mute wouldn't be of much use in a home docking bay. And wouldn't it be easier to wire a power adapter to the in home power connector istead of wiring the ground and I would assume that you would need to split the hot to the permanent power and the ignition switch to get the empeg to turn on? So then you would only need 18 signal and no power terminals.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

How about a toggle switch that dims the display as you litent to your empeg in the dark, before bed?
the remote line would be pretty useless, mute you might be able to use, though...
hook it in to the phone line somehow, so when your stereo is blaring, it will mute when the phone rings....

I would think that you could accomplish the dimming through hijack without any additional wiring. As far as using the phone line for a mute, you have a constant voltage on your phone line which would either mute the player all the time or not at all.

Yeah, by pressing a bunch of buttons, navagation to the dimmer settings, and adjusting the dimmer,
What I am talking about is a toggle switch on the front or rear of the home docking station that you could just press and it would dim the display as it would by flipping on the headlights in your car...
The phone thing would be tricky, but I bet someone here could make it work...
Easiest implementation I can think of would involve one of those light bulb ringeres for the blind.
but even that would involve some fancy rigging, I admit.

I have received an email from Digikey saying that all the parts are not in stock and are due in mid July which I pretty much already knew. I have the option of cancelling the order if I wish.
I have also received a quote from the Australian distributors. They are actually quite a bit cheaper although their minimum order quantities kind of stuff things up. Basically their prices are the same numbers but in Aussie dollars instead of US dollars which makes them about half price. They also quote a 4-6 week lead time.
So basically for the same kind of money I can get
3 plugs + 70 signal terminals + 10 power terminals from digikey
OR
3 plugs + 100 signal terminals + 100 power terminals from the Australian distributor. (their terminals come in packs of 100 only)
I am thinking I will stay with digikey since it seems from their backorder page that they will be getting more stock which would mean others can then go and order products from stock. It looks like they are ordering 1000 each of the terminals and 30 of the plugs. What's left would go into stock and be available for others.
I have looked at the numbers some more and I will probably go for the Australian distributor instead and cancel the Digikey order. Anyone else can order through Digikey if they wish though. Perhaps someone may organize a group buy although given the low MOQ it's probably not worth it. If you're in the US/Canada and you want the bits then I'd suggest digikey.
Are there any Aussies/Kiwis out there who want to order some parts for a sled connector? I am willing to pay up front and then mail the parts to you guys.

I would be happy to purchase a couple of connectors.
I'm pretty useless when it comes to assembling that sort of thing, so if someone is happy to order the bits. build and ship to me, I will componsate for their efforts, price permitting. Cash up front if necessary.
I am in the uk by the way.

I am going to purchase enough bits for 9 connectors. I really only think it's worth it for Australian/NZ guys and that's what I was originally planning.
However, if there is enough demand (must be by my time Friday) I will consider doing a group buy for everyone. It seems I get things about half price compared to Digikey. I can do a complete connector (all 24 pins) for less than A$20 (~US$11). Postage to the US/England/Canada would be a bit of a killer I think but I am prepared to do it.
Also remember that this does not include a sled of any sort nor does it have any of the wiring (RCAs, serial port, tuner connector or even the loose wires). I will consider making up complete harnesses although I probably can't do a tuner connector. I will not be investigating making/folding up complete sleds though. That's your own problem for now .
Anyone interested in this email me (christianh<at>pdd.edmi.com.au also in my profile) with the number you want and your location - also let me know if you want a made up harness and how much extra (on top of the $20/$11 - make sure you note which currency) you would be willing to pay for that. I will post what results from this on Friday night.

Will this plug you construct, plug into the sled adapter on my empeg
and give me the front & rear RCA outputs that the sled has ?

Yes it would have. I am probably not going to offer this though. Only two poeple wanted full harnesses.
It is/was going to have the 9 pine serial port, the power filter, the fuse holder and all 3 RCA pairs for front L/R, rear L/R and AUX in L/R.
It would only be missing the ISO connector (which seems to be a bit of a waste of time to me) and the tuner connector.
If your interested in plugs (and harnesses) let me know via email. Tell me your location so I can research postage costs too.

Well, first I wanted to mention that I would have taken a full harness if it was available, just to serve my laziness.
Also, I would really like to find a source for the tuner connector (both plug and socket), but I can't find one at my usual sources. Is anyone around, knowing where to order those?
I would like to built a longer connection cable between tuner module and empeg, because there is simply not enough space for the tuner module within reach, or the distance between the installed tuner to the empeg is to far for the original extension cable (which I would like to leave unmodified).
cu,
sven
