Woot! Excitement! I've only had the thing a couple of days and there's already a nice shiny new Beta Kernel to install!

The only problem now is that I was thinking of installing the Hijack system to see what it was like but of course there isn't an updated pre-built Kernel for us Windows wimps yet... Anyone got an idea how long it'll be before some kind soul updates the hijack page?

Oh and feel free to point and laugh if I've missed something obvious - I'm kinda new to all this hyper-geeky stuff... but I'm learning fast thanks to you peeps!

HiJack v193 (current as of writing) works with 2.0beta11 (as far as I've tested...)

I know it says beta10 on Marks site, but IIRC the number gets upped one when the release goes from internal (alpha testers only) to public, so beta11 should be same as beta10 except the version label...

You can use whichever version of Hijack is current (v193 at the moment). It will work fine with 2.0b11.

Ok, so to get this straight: I could download the .zimage with hijack193 and the 2beta10 kernel pre-built and it would be exactly the same as the hijack 193 and 2beta11 prebuilt will be when Mark inevitably uploads it? I can't see any notes to say beta11 is any different from beta10 so I guess you're dead right. ooo! I can't wait so I'm gonna do it!

*UPDATE* I just upped my machine using the pre-built kernel on Mark's site and it's still marked as Beta11 in the About section of the player so I guess it's just labelled as 10 on his site. Cool!

The "About" display on the empeg shows the Empeg software version number (beta11), not the Hijack version number (v193). The two are not at all related.

And yes, Hijack v193 (and most prior versions) is compatible with beta11.

Yeah I know that but the concern was with the pre-built kernel on the site still being for Beta10.

It's still labelled as Beta10 on the site but it reports as Beta11 in the About section after I uploaded it to the player so I am assuming that the downloadable file on the site has indeed been rebuilt with Beta11and it's just that the filename/site info haven't been updated yet.

Maybe I'm wrong but hey the upshot is that I now have a player with Hijack 193 and Beta11 without having to do any compiling myself so I'm happy!

Oh and it rocks!

The kernel hasn't changed between Beta 10 and Beta 11.

Cheers for the confirmation Rob - I don't think I can take any more excitement so I'm going to have to go lie down in a darkened room. & I haven't even begun to try to put it in my car yet

The prebuilt kernel on Mark's Hijack page is for *ANY* 2.0 beta, not only Beta 10. It says so on the web page. Mark has stated so himself in this thread. What more info do you need? Further, the ABOUT section is the empeg kernel version - it has nothing to do with Hijack.

Just run it and be happy. Mark's Hijack will always be able to be downloaded and installed on whatever player beta software you can download. Unless someone were to have kept Mark tied in a dark basement for a couple of months without access to a computer. You will NEVER have to do any compiling yourself.

Read the notes on Mark's website and read the FAQ. Yesterday. Or just post another message to the general forum and let's start this loop of confusion again.

Damn, just as I send off my first empeg back for repair and the other is winging it's way across the Atlantic do they release an update.

I'm feeling very jealous and can't wait 'till either of them arrive.

It means that the audio thread is waiting for data. It's a diagnostic.

I've been meaning to ask you: In addition to the "w" icon, there is also a new icon where it is solid gray in the center instead of hollow with gray dots in the center. What's that one?

There used to be four possible icons, documented here as:

No icon: Disk drives are spun down.
Icon with empty center: Drives are spinning up.
Icon with gray center: Drives are spun up.
Icon with bright center: Data is being read.

But now there appear to be six. I'm going to rewrite the FAQ entry as follows, but I don't know how to complete it:

No icon: Disk drives are spun down.
Icon with empty center: Drives are spinning up.
Icon with gray dots in center: Drives are spun up.
Icon with bright dots in center: Data is being read.
Icon with the letter W next to it: Audio thread is waiting for data (for diagnostic purposes).
Smaller icon with solid gray in center: ?????

Maybe I should get screen shots of these...
