For those us out there with more than one Empeg/rioCar who would like clone the files from one to the other, Roger has published on his website his Lazy Bastard's Guide to Cloning your empeg which I can personally attest works well - I used it overnight to clone all 7GB of songs & playlists etc from my original 12GB Empeg to Drive0 of my 60Gb RioCar.

I used cygwin on my Windows [XP] platform to do the initial Extract of NetCat for the Debian platform - which is the only place you need the 'linux' platform for other than on the empegs being cloned. I am sure that we could even eliminate that step if needed.

The only question I have, is how come Roger knew I was the same kind of Lazy Bastard as he is [hence the guide] - Thanks a million Roger, I owe you one.

I'm currently cloning my 40 to my 60 using Jemplode. I'm doing one genre at a time. It's taking an awefully long time that's going to be running all weekend, for sure, but it's working...

I must admit, a nice 'point and click' tool would be nice, but then Roger [and myself included] are honest enough to admit we're too lazy/busy on other things to write such a tool.

The big benefit of Roger method is that the songs/files are effectively 'copied' online across the network from empeg1 to empeg2 - this does take a while - I think about 4 hours at least on my machine, but once the copy is started, its painless- it just works.

I'm getting this when I try and clone using Rogers technique:

empeg:/empeg/bin#
empeg:/empeg/bin# cd /drive0
empeg:/drive0# rwm
empeg:/drive0# nc -l -p 2999 | tar xvf -
***(swapped cable to source empeg)
empeg:/empeg/bin#
empeg:/empeg/bin# cd /drive0
empeg:/drive0# tar cvf - fids foo | nc dest-empeg 2999
dest-empeg: forward host lookup failed: : No such file or directory
fids/
fids/100
fids/101
fids/120
fids/121
fids/130
fids/131
fids/140
fids/141
fids/220
fids/221
empeg:/drive0#

Any ideas?? I can see both units via LAN through Emplode.

Thanks

Your player doesn't know how to do hostname lookups. Use the IP address instead of "dest-empeg".

I noticed a lot of collisions on my hub while cloning the drive and doing other LAN functions on my system. Yes, I have a very cheap hub. I made up a crossover cable and just connected the two empegs to each other, seperate from my LAN. Now they are happily plugging away isolated from the LAN.

Collisions are a normal part of ethernet communication. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks, Actually I knew collisions were a normal event. I just like the idea of the transfer of fids between the two drives taking place between the empegs on an isolated system. Considering the amount of time it takes and the limited amount of understanding I actually have it just makes me feel better. I know I won't interfere with the process accidentally. I really am just learning. It took me way too long to set up a harddrive with the linux OS just so I could convert the .deb file to a tar.gz. Some of that was working to get XWindows up and running.
