Hi Guys,
Long time no post!
Recently dug out the old empeg and decided to give it a check over, the old hard drives are basically dead but I did manages to get a few old tunes off them first.
I have some spare CF cards, and thought I would give the upgrade a go. Why the heck not!
Using Mark's Big Disk Builder from the link at the top of the BBS, and the dual CF adapter from Amazon I saw recommended on another thread.
I have loads of CF cards to try, and all but one I have a problem with. I have a nice 64Gb and a 128Gb sat here I'd love to use but I'm having no joy. The build appears to complete, I get a prompt on the screen telling me it's complete and a reboot is needed, reboots fine.
The problem comes when I actually go to load music on, it basically fails.
I know the header, cable and the adapter are good, as I have this one crappy branded (Duracell) CF card that appears to work fine in the setup. So how come I can't get these 2 Sandisk branded 64Gb and 128Gb cards working? One is an Extreme the other Extreme Pro, both UDMA 7 on the outside.
Is there something I've missed here? Do I need a particular kind of CF card?
Cheers
Cris

Hmmmm I'm having problems here. After a couple of reboot and a couple of sync attempts the 128Gb card did spring to life and allowed me to copy a track to it and then play it back. Bingo I thought! But the joy was short lived. I power cycled it and it came up with "No Hard Disk Found" again, but the original drives back on (had always booted at least with these in) same, no hard drive found. Okay, so start over, with just a single CF Card: use the smaller one, 64GB, in the "master" slot of the dual adapter. See if you can get that working first.
EDIT: Once that is working, and the setup again proved to be sane, then try two cards, noting that the builder will REFORMAT _both_ cards.
I don't have any 128GB CF Cards on hand, so I have never tested with those. If either of the Sandisk cards you have claim to be "CFast" or "CF+" rather than plain "CF", then that would explain the issues.

Yeah, I googled the SDCFXPS-128G and found a page that actually listed tech specs, and it says 3.3V there. Dunno if it is also supposed to tolerate 5V, but it sounds like it prefers 3.3V. So if you can change the internal "jumper" of the dual-CF adapter, it should be fine going forward. Here's a description of the voltage needs from another site I found ( http://www.centon.com/support/123-compact-flash-faq): Compact Flash cards support both 3.3V and 5V operation and can be interchanged between 3.3V and 5V systems. This means that any CF card can operate at either voltage. Other small form factor flash cards may be available to operate at 3.3V or 5V, but any single card can operate at only one of the voltages. Rather strange wording there, but it sounds as if 3.3V should work. But then so also should 5V. EDIT: I also found this page: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-46142.html which suggests that 5V is the correct jumper setting for use in the empeg/RioCar. So probably not the issue here.

Thanks Mark.
I've tried with the 16Gb that previously worked, built from scratch again, it failed and gives what looks like to be a very similar boot sequence to the first log I posted above. Also does almost exactly the same with the original drives in.
So would you think some of the hardware has gone bang? This line makes me think that...
"smc_init couldn't find card"
I saw a previous post on here somewhere about that maybe being a result of a chip in the IDE interface going bad?
Cheers

Ah, right. I'm a bit rushed here this weekend, so I didn't read the logs thoroughly enough.
The SMC thing is the USB controller that shares the bus with the IDE connector. When the USB chip goes bad, it can interefere with the IDE controller. So, maybe.
Does it still do "smc_init couldn't find card" without ANY CF Cards or drives connected? If so, then that's very likely the issue.
It is fixable, but I'm simply not in a position to help further as I normally would at the moment. Perhaps others will chime in during my partial absence. Otherwise ping me again in a week and I'll help figure it out.
Cheers

Yep, sadly the same with the ide cable totally disconnected.
There is no rush here, any help would be very much appreciated. I've been practicing my repair skills over the past couple of years, swapping out a chip on this motherboard would currently be just beyond my skill level, but I have all the tools to do it.
Anyone got any spares knocking about?
Cheers

I think mostly we just need to neuter/disable the USB chip, which is much easier than trying to fix it.
