Can't upload or change config...

Hi Guys
Bit of a bizzare one this (for me anyway, not had this problem before).
Went to upload a new album to the 'Peg yesterday evening so I could jive on the way to work. Popped the Empeg into my ML dock as usual and fired up Emplode. So far, so hoopy. Dragged & dropped the folder containing the files to my playlist structure in Emplode and also made a slight config change (the shutdown from standby timer). Hit 'Synch' and waited.
The player rebooted (which I thought was odd) and Emplode waited for it, then skipped through the rest of it's checklist, inlcuding the uploading tunes entry, lightning fast.
When the 'ta-da' had chimed, I checked my new playlist entry and it wasn't there. Neither was my config change. Most odd I thought.
Brief recent software history: Been running Version 2 final with the most recent Hijack. Upgraded to A11 for a short time (made the database fixes) and found it it unstable (crashed now and again), so reverted back to 2.00 final. I did the database fix again after downgrading and the machine is running normally apart from the above problem.
Any clue guys?

Sounds like what almost always happens here whenever I use Emplode to tweak my player's stuff. Which is why I procrastinate like mad about touching the damn thing.
Cheers

You could try jEmplode - I very occasionally get oddness (usually seems connected to network loading) with emplode, but jEmplode seems to work every time - at least on v2 final. On 3alpha11 I usually need an emplode sync after jemplode just to make it all work.

Major, I think you may have run into this problem. I think you may need to FSCK the thing. I had something similar happen when I tried one of the alphas and then reverted back to 2.0, just like you did. My player works perfectly fine now, and I do all my updates with Emplode 2.0 final. One thing to check is make sure you're using emplode 2.00 final and not emplode 2.10.

Thanks Tony, I'll Hyperterm into it tomorrow when I've finished my block of nights and report back. Thanks for your help.

Thanks Frog, but I've never got on with jEmplode I'm afraid and this is the 1st time I've ever really had a problem with Emplode. I'll try the FSCK tomorrow and see how I get on. Cheers for your input though.

Well, no joy with that seemingly. Still have the same problem. Couple of issues I had whilst doing the procedure that you linked, Tony. When I typed the lines 'umount /dev/hda4' & 'umount /dev/hdc4' I got a bash error saying 'unmount no such file or directory'. Also, after typing 'fsck -fay /dev/hda4' and waiting a while, the player got to the 5th check and then even after 10 hours, I still couldn't type anything further in Hyperterminal. Had to reboot the player and shutdown/restart hyperterminal before continuing. Perhaps I should try the whole procedure again...
I logged the player booting and an attempt to upload some MP3s. I think the error is when I click synchronise, the player is rebooting rather than writing files or a new config. I can't even edit the config.ini file. Emplode states 'checking media' but the player is rebooting... log follows:

Just to simplify things, and free up some RAM, try nuking emptris and pacman from the startup sequence.

I can't edit my config.ini. No configuration changes stick, either in config.ini or in the player config. Can I manually edit config.ini via hyperterminal?

Sure you can. Just because there's no MS-Windows GUI that works doesn't mean it cannot be done easily!
FTP to your player (it has Hijack installed, so it has FTP capability) and GET the config.ini file (copy it to your PC). Edit the file on your PC, and then FTP again to PUT the edited copy onto the player.
With a command-line FTP client, the commands look something like this:
ftp you.players.ip.addr cd /empeg/var get config.ini quit
...
ftp your.players.ip.addr cd /empeg/var site rw put config.ini site ro site reboot quit

Admittedly, it was in the general text and not bold alongside those lines (I'm going to edit it so that it is) the FAQ did say: If you have only one hard disk, you may omit the lines that include /dev/hdc4.
However, you shouldn't have got those errors for hda4.
I think your problem all along may have been TTSClock, Emptris, and Pacman, some or all of which are running from the music partition (Drive0). Those programs are locking that partition and making it so it can't be read-write for the synchronization procedure. Remove them, do the necessary steps to FSCK, rebuild your databases, and you should be OK.

Reminder: If you are editing config.ini on your PC, you must not do it with Notepad. Notepad will insert Windows-Specific CR/LF pairs into the file whereas a linux file just expects an LF. You must use a Unix-Aware editor that will not mangle the linefeeds when re-saving, such as UltraEdit or EditPad Classic or some such.

Quote: Admittedly, it was in the general text and not bold alongside those lines (I'm going to edit it so that it is) the FAQ did say: If you have only one hard disk, you may omit the lines that include /dev/hdc4.
I do have two hard drives.
One question: Why would the programs that I have running (emptris, et al) be affecting the player now when I've had them installed/running for well over a year with no prior problems?
I've done the alpha and back to final before too, with these things in place.

OK, config.ini looked like this:

And now looks like this:

I'll try the FSCK again now.

OK, I think I've been a grade-A cock.
I remember whilst I had A11 installed I thought that my reserve cache settings might me causing visual stuttering on track changes, so I reduced it to zero (see above). Of course this has had a knock-on effect to the memory available for the player. I didn't re-do the FSCK, I just tried uploading some choons and all seems well.
I'll re-edit the config.ini to inlclude the lines I had before, but I'll set a reserve cache again too.
All should be tickety-boo after that.
I extend my heart-felt gratitude, as always, for the excellent help I receive on this board.
Just out of interest, why do I keep getting the error message about 'unmount'? Any clues? Obviously the file doesn't exist on my player, just wondering why.

One possible tip for people with a similar problem (extra programs running off of the music partition and therefore preventing sync from working), might be to prefix those lines with ";@AC ;@HOME ", instead of just ";@AC ".
That way you can enable/disable them on the fly (almost) using the HOME/WORK location selector on the Hijack menu.
Cheers

All is now indeed tickety-boo. So, it was the reserve cache settings all along. D'oh.

??? You didn't change any ReserveCache setting. EDIT: oh, I see we posted simultaneously earlier on. But I still think..
It was the extra programs that were running, preventing the music partition from being remounted R/W for the sync.

Because the correct spelling is umount, not unmount

Although, I've put my config.ini back to the way it was, but specified a reserve cache of 15 and now it all works again.
As for the umount/unmount... I'm a berk.

Odd. Earlier in the thread, he said umount (i.e., indicating he'd done it correctly), I checked that first.
I'll clarify that in the FAQ.

No, I definitely cocked it up.

Heh. You typed it correctly when asking the question about why the command didn't work (it was the first thing I looked for, I even quoted it back in one of my messages), you just didn't type it correctly when actually executing the commands. I missed that bit. (And looking even closer, I see that you told us the error message said unmount. I missed that bit, too. I only looked closely at the bit where you initially said what commands you had typed.) Well, I've updated the FAQ entry anyway, so hopefully folks in the future won't make the same mistake. You aren't the only person to have done that.

I believe the first one to do that was the bloke who left out the n in the first place when naming the original command!

I always thought truncated Unix command names was silly, right upto the point that I first had to admin a machine on the other side of the Atlantic via a 9600 modem link

Quote: Or even RFC 1149.
Now that brings back a memory of one of the high points of the 2005 empeg meet in Amersfoort.
Rob V. was talking about an adventure that he and Patrick had had, involving a pair of walkie-talkies relayed through a model aircraft, enabling them to talk without being in line-of-sight, Rob on one side of a hill, Patrick on the other. Patrick said something about using it to transmit data, whereupon Rob started saying "one one oh one oh oh one one oh oh..." to which Patrick replied, "Rob, you've just invented IP over Voice."
That story got applause from the attendees.
