Ok. I need help with my empeg My empeg does not seem to turn on in any way. The led pulses regularly after what seems a regular boot. But, pushing any button will not change it from this status. During boot, when all messages seem to appear on screen properly, I can hold down the knob and access HiJack. I also have the time to see vital sign and see that all memory and drive are recognized correctly. I can' see anything wrong. But then it goes in stand-by at the end of the boot, and stays like that no matter what I do. Here is the boot log: Code:

MMmmm... this is very puzzling. The hardware looks fine, and the software looks okay.
One thing I think you should try first: install the latest Hijack kernel. This can be done through the serial port without booting. I know there have been a few fixes since v440, but I do not know if any of those will help here. Try it.
Cheers

Thanks for your help Mark.
Ok, I updated HiJack usig Logoedit, and the update succeeded. Still, no change.
Also, the empeg responds to PINGs, but the web interface (Charcoal) does not come up when I try to connect to it using IE. Ftp responds, I do log in, but when I try to get a list the ftp hands at "150 Opening Data Connection".

Mmm.. I wonder if the +16MB of DRAM is acting up after boot ?
Here (attached) is a recent "factory" kernel, *without* support for the extra DRAM.
Try booting from it and see if anything changes --> install it with Tony's LogoEdit, same as before. If nothing new/good happens, then put Hijack back onto it afterwards.

Ok, I tried and nothing changed. So I reinstalled v. 476 of HiJack.
One more thing: when the player eventualy enters stand-by mode, I can't even start HiJack, even though during boot I can do so.
Later on I'll ry to open it.

This is very strange, but I have a faint memory of somebody else reporting a similar problem not long ago (years ago?).
In your case, you said that the buttons (front panel?) *do* work until the player decides to go standby. That is a good sign, as it means the hardware is probably fine.
Next step is to connect via serial cable (ckermit, hyperterm, whatever), and hit Control^C to get a shell prompt on the player, after it finishes booting up. This should work, though it may take a few seconds.
At the shell prompt, try player -i to reset the saved settings.
Cheers

Mark,
Will do. I am at work now and left the empeg at home, still open (yes, it was a sad commute).
Now, some more info, since I could not be more detailed earlier as I was rushing out. This morning I had ten minutes to open the empeg. I didn't really look at anything, but I noticed that the IDE cable had lost its plastic skin in two points, scratching agaist the display board. Wires are visible, unfortunately, but they seem still protected enough not to create any problem, yet. However, do you think that they may have shortcuted something on the display board?
I am going to be back late tonight, due to Tori Amos concert here in Rome (:D at least, somthing is good today!), and will try to get to the command prompt and replace the ide cable, just to be on the safe side. I will also put some protection to it. I should've done that before.
Again, thank you very much for you help, as usual.

Mmm.. possibly. If they do look a bit scuffed-up, then some extra layer between the cable and the display board certainly would not hurt. Perhaps just a few wraps of tape around the cable would do it.
Cheers

Ok, I could not access the shell in any way. I tried several times, and never had such a hard time to do so in the many times I did in the past. I tried CTRL-C and Q at least ten times. So, i decided to reinstall the empeg software. I used the image bult by Mark, including LBA48 support and HiJack 464, via serial cable. The installation was reported as successful. All on the display looked fine. At the end of the process, the empeg logo stayed there, while I seem to remember that the Empeg was supposed to finally reboot. The Emplode upgrade wizard instead said all was fine. I clicked finish. I manually rebooted the Empeg by unplugging power. And now, nothing has changed. I am trying to boot my spare empeg by plugging this HDD into it.

I tried to boot on backup player using same HDD, and all worked fine. So, the problem is in the hardware of player 1 To rule out that the problem is in the display board of player one, i swapps the display boards between players, and player 1 still does not turn on, backup player boots. So problem is somewhere on the motherboard of player 1. The good part is that I can use the lighted buttons on backup empeg. The bad parts are 1. can't use the extra ram meory I had on the motherboard. 2. I have a motherboard to repair. And after all work done on it (digital, optic output and extra memory), that's bad 3. My backup player used to be my main player, and suffered from one bad problem: lower volume on rear left speaker. The opimist in me hopes that tomorrow, when I plug it in my car, the problem is magically gone. If not, I am back to that, too. Ok, two empegs and none working properly. That's not good.

Well, Spring ends on June 22nd, right? So, I can selfishly suggest that it's better in Spring . And I can offer some good dinners, too! In reality, both Spring and Fall are great time for Rome. I tend to prefer Fall because I simply like falling leaves and the Fall atmosphere in general, but I have to say that most people prefer Rome in springtime.

Mark, you're more than welcome in our bunk space, regardless of empeg repair services (which will be very very appreciated, anyway! ) . My gf and I have a guest room which accomodates 1 person perfectly, two if they are not too space demanding Also, my experience with houses in Canada with fabulous workshop in basement tells me that you shold consider that an apartment in the city in Rome is definitely smaller than that, generally speaking! So, all that we need to decide is when and for how long!

Interesting Updates: 1. After a couple of days without problems on Empeg 2, today it locked in stand-by mode too. That was completely puzzling. Same HDD as old player, same displayboard, different motherboard. And, two days of flawless playing in between failures. I realized then that maybe one thing could be causing this problem: an MP3 tune! That would have explained the fact that the hardware and the boot seemed ok. Thoretically, if a faulty tune was to be restarted upon boot, it could lock the player application. So, during boot, I pushed "next" several times. When boot completed, the player skipped few songs and entered play mode without any problem! So, mistery solved! The good thing is that I do not seem to have any falty motherboard any more! 2. The empeg 2, which used to suffer from low volume on rear left speaker, is now working perfectly. Maybe moving wires behind the connector worked. So, currently, it seems this empeg is pretty ok too. 3. Tori Amos' Concert was SUPER! I got a picture and an autograph too I'm happy. Have a great weekend you all.
