I will be in the UK if there is a meet or if there isn't a meet. I had such a great time last year that I'll be doing it again. See you then???

I'm not planning to organise anything this year, I'm saving up my ideas for a 10th anniversary bash in 2008. However this should not stop someone else putting something together!

How about a plain and simple piss up? All we need is a cheap Hotel somewhere with food nearby, a car park and maybe a small conf room to have the party / piss up in. Even better a community hall or something without a licence and we could just all bring our own booze Cheers Cris.

Sounds good to me.
There is no way we could live up to a meet by Rob&Rob Co. but we could give it a shot.
What are we talking about? Friday and Sat night? Do what you want during the day?
Cheers

Well, if that's what you want then Manchester is the place. Manchester United is just about the biggest football team there is. I am pretty sure holding the event in a place like that, esp on a match day, will be out of the question due to cost. Someone else will have to comment on ticket prices, but it won't be cheap. Games are often mid afternoon which would leave the evening free for the piss up.
Cheers

Not too bad I guess, I will check with Nicola (big Utd fan ) what the seat are like. There is no way I'll be paying that much to watch 22 guys kick a ball around a bit of grass I like the idea of Manchester, it may be part of the UK that people may not have been to before and there is lots to do and see. Transport links are also very good as Andy says. Can we collect opinions please.... Cheers Cris.

Yeah...but the exchange rate is poor right now (for the US anyway), so the disparity is greater than it looks. If you did the price as a ratio to income, then you'd get a better picture.
(according to my calculations, about 3.8% of an average Brit's weekly income vs. 7.5% of an average American's)

Quote: The average gross weekly household income for London, at £711 in 1999-2002, was £186 higher than the average for the UK.
(ref) That's £525, times 52 weeks is £27300.
Quote: Overall the mean household income in the United States according to the US Census Bureau 2004 Economic Survey was $60,528
(ref)
£25 ÷ £27300 = 0.09% $62.38 ÷ $60,528 = 0.1%.
Hmm. Pretty close, actually.

Travelodge have very cheap rooms if you book in advance, I stayed in the Croydon central one for £26 a night, and that was only booked a couple of weeks in advance. (that one has a good rail link to london and some nice trams, but isn't in a particularly good area) edit: Of course cost probably isn't too much of an issue with most empeggers, as long as we aren't talking Ritz prices

Just to be completely obvious about it, YES, please!
SWMBO & I were already hoping to manage a trip up the midlands this year, and if we can manage to coordinate with some kind of empegBBS gathering, then all the better!

Travelodge pre-booking "guaranteed" rooms and then being full when you turn up owing to an over-booking policy is something that happened to me, and is a scandal that has been featured on Watchdog.
Stating, what I think is a foregone conclusion: I'm up for it!
Just a thought, most universities are keen to let bedrooms and other facilities, out of season, I don't know about Manchester, it would keep the cost down.

I'm thinking probably around the same time as last year. It's also a hopefully quiet period at work, we'll have either launched everything successfully or it'll have all gone tits up and I'll be out of a job, in which case I'll have loads of time to organise it all! Cris and I probably need to get our heads together before we commit to anything too serious.

Manchester sounds like a great place for the meet. And a ManU game would be great, if I don't get beat to death that is (I was rather terrified walking across town at 2am with a huge backpak the night of a home game). Regardless, I won't be staying at the hostel in the south west of town; it was a tad underequiped and the beds nearly broke my back.
September was a great time to see the UK last year, though my work didn't much like me leaving at the start of the semester. Regardless, sounds like a great time.
Guys, you've got a good thing going here. Thanks!

Heh.. that is the ladies program in my case. I'd be dragged and quartered if we spent time in Manchester without seeing Old Trafford from the inside.

Sounds like good fun! *If* I can make it, my vote would be for anyting other than the weeks surrounding June 16. I'll be throwing my birthday-campout bash at my property again. Of course, you're all invited!
There's lots to see and do in Manchester- I wouldn't shy away from a ManU game or a trip to any science/industry museum.

The science and industry museum there is pretty nice (the parts that actually have content, that is). I spent way longer than I should have in the engine room, talking to the mechanics who keep the steam machines running. It's like Wikipedia come to life.

Me and mrs lbt would be up for a get-together. However we are unbelievably not interested in football - hell, I'd rather use an iPod - and that's saying something isn't it Mr You-know-who... Museum sounds good - not sure how parking (safely) would work... I went to school there and the place was almost as bad as Liverpool

If footballers can park their Veyrons in the street without issue, I don't think you'll have a problem. Manchester has more than it's fair share of fancy cars, in fact, the only place I've seen a higher concentration is in London.
BTW: Should be having a meeting this weekend to try and sort a few things out before we post an update.
