Just in case some of you non-English speakers don't know what strawberries are:

The teeny tiny ones found growing wild in fields are best.

Fresh-picked (by one's own hand) are much better than the ones in the grocery. Really fresh strawberries are very delicate. The ones bred for better shipping lost something in taste & texture along the way.

And he's failing to make his number come in at less than 0.5%. (BTW, there are many other better and more effective ways to prove me a freak).

Now for a poll of my own:
Grits: disgusting or delicious?

Wow.

Other than Heather, I've gotta know who hates strawberries.

For the record, I voted Eh, but I really fall somewhere between Eh and Yuck.

On the other hand, if the grits you've had were sandy, you need to try to get them somewhere other than New Jersey.

I voted "take 'em or leave 'em". But then, I just don't eat a lot of fruit.

The UK government has recently issued guidelines and advertising, urging people to eat "5-a-day" portions of fruit and veg. Personally, I'm lucky if I get to 2-a-day on any given day.

Me, though I generally like strawberry flavoring in other things. There's just something about the texture and tartness of real strawberries that I don't like.

I am completely pro-strawberry and anti-grits. Hate 'em.

Once you go about 50 miles south of where I live (and then another 100, where I went to school), you start getting into "grits territory." I define this region as a place where, when ordering breakfast, the default side is grits instead of hash browns/home fries. Yuck. Why eat that stuff when I can have delicious fried potatoes?

I'm with you on this one. I lived in the South for 12 years and hated grits the entire time. Strawberries, however...

That's kind of like saying you know what tacos are because you live in Canada.

Er, I think that grits are in more need of explanation than strawberries. Thankfully, there is always Google

For the record, I love both. Obviously, small, wild strawberries (we call them "forest strawberries" as opposed to "garden" ones) are far better, but all will do if ripe. Of course, unsweetaned whiped fresh (not sterilized!) cream with 30+% fat goes very nicely with them.

I like grits cooked to medium firm consistency and simply eaten with butter, sour cream, fresh cold milk (my favorite; milk must be freezing cold, grits piping hot), Dalmatian variety of spicy fish stew ("brodet" or "brujet") or those litle peaces of fried pork fat left over whne one extracts lard.

Ugh, I am hungry!

The very first strawberry I ever ate -- i was four or five, i think -- was one I had picked myself.

It was rotten.

So were the second through 12th or so.

Nobody had told me that the ones that looked the nicest are in fact quite bad for you. I got quite sick. Haven't eaten strawberries since.

That sounds like the first time I went waterskiing. Nobody told me to let go of the rope when I fell.

mmmmm....torpedo...

I didn't waterski again for about five years.

The bright red ones are the best ones and certainly not rotten. Or did you think brown and wrinkly looked nicest?

Oh, yeah. I kept meaning to point out that grits is virtually the same thing as polenta, but kept forgetting. (Grits are looser and usually a little more coarsely ground, but I've seen grits fried into cakes that are just like polenta, except less, uh, plasticky.)

Then I sit down to eat dinner tonight, turn on Good Eats, and Alton Brown starts talking about grits. Coincidence?

I tried waterskiing for the first time this summer. I wouldn't think it necessary to tell someone to let go -- have you no self-preservation instincts?

Getting good strawberries has been harder since the growers started pushing the plants toward bigger fruit. (Less picking per pound) They got the bigger berries, but didn't take care about keeping the flavor good.

The best is when you can buy them ripe picked right at the field. Lucky me there is just such a field about 2 mi away.

You'd be suprised. A lot of people don't let go even when they're told to.

I also voted yum for both, but my grits experiences have been mild. Just simple with loads of butter mixed in.

My recollection is not perfect but i think the ones i picked were big and not so bright red any more but not brown or wrinkly. i do definitely remember being rather violently sick and the head lady of the day care investigating the reason, telling me the strawberries i had gotten were overripe, and laughing at me for it.

Grits, on the other hand, are delicious (with salt). I'd take them over home fries any day, especially if there's no Old Bay to be had...
