MKII no sound

Newie here.....ok, I have a MKII that has never been modified in any way. The problem is when we boot it up under 110 there is no sound, also, when I hook the yellow 12v wire to positive and the black to negative, the entire system will not work. I checked for power all the way to the stereo and it is there. (fuse good) I checked the settings and it is not on aux power either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance, riogolf

A couple times when I first installed an empeg I got no sound in the car. Then I almost kicked myself in the head when I remember that the volume setting is unique in AC and DC mode and that the default setting is 0. So, if you haven't already tried it, try turning up the volume.

And you will need to ensure you understand all the connections on your car's loom, and where they should connect (or not) to the empeg sled. Might sound silly, but there is a lot that can go wrong at this point.
Questions -
Does it boot in the car? Does the amp power on?
If both of the answers are yes, and you have followed JBjorgen's advice, then you may need to get into checking connections, cables, polarities etc etc

Sorry...Roger is correct (of course...he's blue). I leave mine locked at 0 in both home and car, so I haven't adjusted the volume in years.

This is normal. You also need a trigger voltage on the orange ignition-switched wire. The player does not start on DC/Car power without the ignition key being turned on.

The unit was uninstalled a few months ago. I have a car battery on my workbench and a set of earphones hooked into the rca jacks labeled front. I assume the unit is capable of powering these without an amp......(I hope) From the above replies, I am going to now hook the yellow AND orange to positive? and the black to negative and that should give me power and sound? About the default sound setting being 0, do you just mean that I need to turn up the knob on the front or is there some setting that I don't know about.... I am off to hook up the wires as stated above, I'll keep you all posted, once again, thanx in advance for your patience and help Sincerely, riogolf

Yes, yellow and orange to positive, black to negative.
As for the volume, the default is -inf, not 0 (my fault). But yes, just turn the knob or use the volume controls on the remote. If you turn it up, it should be plenty loud enough to hear in your headphones.

Yes, but remember, only on the test bench.
If you do that when it's actually fully installed into the car, you'll cause things like loud amplifier pops coming through your speakers. When you install it into the car, the correct wiring scheme is yellow to constant power, orange to ignition-switched power.

ok, I hooked it up and everything came on but the sound. I did notice something that seemed wierd to me though. When I turned the volume knob up it was reading in negative db's. Is this normal? It didn't go to positive until I reached overdrive.

When I go to "sound" then "loudness" it reads in positive db's +7.5 to be exact. The normal knob setting counts backward as it gets higher: eg. -21db, -20db that seems strange to me

I guess what I am saying is my stereo works fine-except for sound- in both 110 and 12v. A guy on here said that a little red jumper was out on his(another thread) and that fixed the problem any ideas there?

Negative db is normal. This is technically the "correct" way of showing volume. Searching for the FAQ entry... The User's Guide perhaps...
You are getting no volume out either connector set in AC or DC mode? That "red jumper" issue was power to the sound stage for DC power - it should not cause trouble if you were in AC mode.
I assume your test files are good, that you do not have the player muted or anything else.

Ok, it could be muted somehow. I don't have the green wire connected but maybe it happened inexplicably?(sp) How would I check my "test files" or check to see if my system is muted? BTW I looked at the equalizer and it says +0 at the top. Is this right? Is there a way to just go back to default settings? Thanx for the replies riogolf

Gah. Yes. That means you didn't cut nor boost any equalizer bands. 0 is the center position of the equalizer, not the top. You can go up past 0 or down below 0. Same with volume. 0 is full non-attenuated volume.

That IS the default settings.
Quote: How would I check my "test files" or check to see if my system is muted?
The MP3 files you're playing. Are they actually good MP3 files? Can you play them on the PC?
If the system is muted it would indicate such on the screen with an icon.

Let's just focus on the AC version for now. If we can get that working, the car installation will be next.
For this, I assume that you have a power brick / transformer connected to the power input on the player. You should have your line out jacks connected from the player to stereo or amplified speaker inputs. For AC use, set the volume to zero db - this is the standard "line level". Your EQ should be flat and your loudness set to zero or off.
Do you get any sound when playing a test track? Do you see any signal on the visuals (like one of the spectrometer ones)? Does it look as if the track is playing normally, counting the seconds, etc?

Thank you for your prompt response. I checked the display and didn't see anything that looked like a mute symbol. I just finished re-reading the User Guide and I didn't find a way to get to the mute function without using the remote. I assume that is just the standby/pause mode.

Correct. To mute with the remote, you HOLD DOWN the pause key. You must have a rio remote for this feature to work.
For anyone who knows: When the cell phone mute line is activated, does it also indicate it on the screen with the same icon as the mute from the remote control?

Honestly, though, if you've got the volume turned up and there's no sound, at this point we should be looking at more basic stuff.
- Are you actually playing MP3s?
- Like Paul said, can you see the time index counter of the MP3 counting upwards indicating it's actually playing?
- Have you hooked the outputs of the player into an amplifier that accepts line-level signals? (The player is not amplified itself.)
If all of those are "yes", then I'd say yeah, it's time to start looking for hardware defects.

OK, I am back in AC mode. (I am plugged into the ac adaptor supplied with the stereo and have RC connectors going from the output on the back of the stereo to the input on my home stereo. I have run it like this for years so I am certain that the connection is viable. I went to several display types and (one was an equalizer) and they jumped and flashed as expected to the music( I assume as there was no sound) I set the sound to 0 and left the equalizer where it was +0. I didn't find the display that showed the counter although it was in that mode when connected to the 12v system and the counter was working nicely. BTW what does the mute icon look like? I can't find a picture of it in the user's guide
Thanx again riogolf

A speaker with a slash across it.
I'd say you're looking at hardware trouble. If you're in the USA, hit the "Eutronix" link at the top of the page.
One other thing to check, first. The home stereo. That input. If you plug something ELSE into that input, do you get sound? Just making sure the problem isn't your home stereo.

OK, I found the counter in AC mode and it is running. I will check the sterio input next, but I think it is fine. It just seems wierd that the sound would be out in AC mode and 12v mode both. Is there a common link between the two?

The outputs from DSP for the front car outputs, also feed the AC-mode outputs. So if there is an electronic failure causing the front outputs to be silent, then that would also silence the AC outputs.

Go into Emplode and set the desired behavior for the cell phone mute line (I forget which screen it's on, something about player configuration I'd guess). It gives you the option of +12v, or -12v. Set it to +12v if it's not that way already, then synch.
Then, using the car sled power, make that happen. (i.e., hook up the power, get the player working, then apply 12v to the mute line.)
I'm *GUESSING* that this will make the mute icon appear, but I'm not certain because I've never used the cell phone mute line on my player.

One question - do you hear anything at all, even beeps when accessing the menu structure? I am just trying to eliminate anything procedural as opposed to (rather catastrophic / unusual) hardware failure.

Well, it eliminates the mp3 as a possible reason why the sound is not working. It is unusual to see the sound production fail on a player completely like this - I can only remember about two or three instances on the board, and usually only AC or DC.
It seems to be either a procedural issue (testing method) or a hardware issue. That is why I was recommending really basic testing - volume set to zero, etc.

I agree, everything works so perfectly, it has to be a simple setting. Remember, I know nothing about this stereo. It could be the most basic, beginner setting imaganible.
Thanx for all your help riogolf BTW do the beeps come over the speakers or is there an internal speaker
