Hmmmm!!! I haven't even filled my 100s yet. But I am getting kinda close. Perhaps... Available to manufacturers in May... I will have to think about it...

Paul doesn't need bigger drives? I think this is a sign of the heat death of the universe.

For sure, I would be interested in a used 100GB drive later this year.

Hahahahahahha! The new drives are not even out yet!!! If (okay, when) they become available and if (okay, when) I decide to update, I will let people know at that time if I am selling off the 100GB drives. At the very least, it will be at minimum two months before they become available. I guess I should start saving my pocket change...

I was about to make a snide remark about Mark having to build an LBA48 kernel, since we all know 160GB drives can't be far behind.
He did. Almost 150 revs ago. Wow.

Yup. Really the only thing we're missing is a version of the "builder" utility that supports LBA48.

What is involved with making a builder? ISTR that this is composed of free stuff and someone just needs to put it together. If this isn't a huge project, it might be kind of fun to take on. I'm no programmer (except for a bunch of FORTRAN number crunching stuff), but I have several years of UNIX sysadmin experience.
If someone could help me understand what is involved, and maybe help me with a "project plan", I might be willing to take this on for the community.

It's really a half-hour exercise at worst.. just repackage the builder .upgrade file to include the Hijack kernel instead of the stock kernel.
What else did we want to add.. Paul?

Sorry. I have been distracted with something locally and have not been following.
I think there are legal or other issues about repackaging or redistributing the player application or the associated upgrade. A dedicated builder would be nice, and it would be useful if you could allow it to take input variables - for example if you know you would need extra space or would want a partition of your own to play with. That is all I can think of off hand.

I'm sure that the Empeg folks would host it from their server if we handed them a working image.

But the builder does not have a player application, does it?

One thing I'd like to know, which may have been discussed elsewhere, is will the player application make use of a larger dynamic data partition if it exists? Somewhere it was mentioned that the 160gb players had enough fids so that there was not enough room on that partition.
Otherwise, the biggest difference is the hijack kernel and the need to have more swap space, correct?
I think this would be fun. Maybe we should start a thread about it.

Ah yes. I hadn't read that yet. Brilliant. How much larger should the dynamic data partition be in the new builder?

Probably nothing special required here. Even the exising "16MB" allocation on a 100MB drive actually gets rounded up to a size large enough for even Paul's FIDs.
But to guarantee it, I suppose 24MB should be enough, instead of 16MB.

Seagate have just announced 120Gb 2.5" drives as well, according to el Reg.

Very cool! It will drive down the cost of the 120GB drives. I did notice that the Seagates were going to be S-ATA. I think this might mean that the 120GB update might be the last that will work in the empeg. If larger drives become S-ATA, we will not be able to push much farther...

It may get a little tight in the case, but you could probably put SATA -> PATA (correct term?) converters on there. I doubt there will be ones availabe for laptop drives, but they exist for desktop drives.

I thought all the existing desktop ones are for the other way around? You can plug a PATA drive into a SATA controller. At least thats what the ones I got with my motherboard do.

This one seems to go the proper way. Even looks to support two SATA drives per parallel channel like we would need.

Cool. Didn't know you could get those. You do lose a lot of the nice features of SATA but since everything is slowly going SATA only then it's the only way to go.

Just to drag this whole thread that much further, here's the pre-announcement of 200GB drives.

That looks like a large parallel connector, though, while we would need a small one, for 2.5" hdd, right? Also, would that fit into the emepg? I really hope the PATA->SATA migration will not compromise our possibility to expand our empegs...

Also bear in mind that the 2.5" connector has pins for power, but the 3.5" connector doesn't.

Greetings! Reviving an old thread. No, I have not seem them on sale anywhere. But I have decided to wait a little before upgrading. It comes down to too many other things I want / need to take care of first. Especially with them already talking about 200GB drives "just down the road"... So if anyone else wants to claim the honor...
