starting a couple of days ago, my unit just hangs. The screen freezes and either immediately or within a couple of minutes, it stops playing audio. At that point, the only thing I can do is reseat it. the weirder thing is that it picks up not exactly when it froze, but as if it were still running in the background until i removed power.
This never happens while I'm using the aux input.
I'm using 2.0 final and hijack v413 and emphatic v2.04. I've tested it with emphatic off and it still happens.

Any sign of disk error messages on console? Any disk symptoms? Does it happen both in the car and on AC power?

Exactly - serial link. Also had you noticed any stuttering or other audio glitching in your playback?

And does that serial log output include the moment in time when the freeze happens? Next thing to try is to see if it's simply trying to cache up a bad track at the moment of the freeze. Play a single tune instead of a large playlist. If that works without freezing, play larger and larger subsets of your collection until you get the freeze again. Try to narrow down which track might be bad and remove it.

I've played more than a few albums since it started happening and I believe it does it on anything. also, i've played the same song twice, sometimes with success, sometimes with a failure I just upgraded hijack to 417 to be on the safe side, and removed the line ;@EXEC_ONCE /usr/local/bin/emphatic from config.ini. now the letters "sr" appear after the [32/38] track listing - what does that mean? also, i ran hyperterminal again and let it play till it crashed (this time induced by hitting the left button a few times) and there was nothing additional output. what next?

Keep in mind that it caches portions of songs in advance, and it's possible that the problem would lie in one of the upcoming songs rather than the one that's playing right now.

That's shuffle and repeat as discussed here.

Very, very odd. Hm.

weird, i've never noticed the sr before!
ok, i've set it to repeat a single song and will see if it fails.
Is there an actual utility to use to scan the drive? i could get a laptop to ide dongle and connect it to a computer running linux and run fsck or something if that's recommended.

Most importantly, that single song needs to be the only thing in the current play order (i.e. [1/1]).

Yes, that's here.

i ran fsck and it didn't report any errors, so i rebooted and started the 1/1 song play again. if it works for the remaining hour of my work day, that should be a good start. by the way, thanks a lot for the help!

well, an hour of Hells Bells and it's still running. I think I'll use Jemplode to dump the whole thing to my computer and see how that goes. if it works, i could then dump it right back. I've done a lot of tweaking to the id3 tags from within emplode, so i prefer that version to the copy i still have on my hard drive.
but if that fails, i guess i can scrub and start over. are you thinking it may be a software issue that could be overcome, or more likely physical damage? couldn't i run fsck with a parameter to check for bad sectors?

Neither. I'm guessing that there's just a track you've uploaded that's somehow corrupted. Bad frame data or some such. All you need to do is figure out which one it is and delete it.
Think... Did you put any new tunes on the player just before the problem happened the first time?
Usually when this happens, it's a pirated tune you got from one of those file swapping services. This hardly ever happens with tunes you've ripped yourself. It's one of the many reasons I prefer to rip my own songs from my own CDs whereever possible.

hmm, i'm not sure if i put anything on there that recently, but i don' t think so.
i was just using jemplode and tried to use the download function, but after selecting a directory and saying ok, it returned me back to the main screen. i thought it was supposed to download all the mp3's...?
my plan is to wipe out the files and re-upload them. any suggestions on the best way to do this?

You shouldn't need to. If it's a specific track, then all you need to do is find it. Start playing larger and larger subsets of your collection until it dies. Create special playlists for this purpose if necessary, and do a divide-and-conquer pattern until find the offending track.
In fact, if it's really a bad track as I suspect, downloading all the files and re-uploading them will just put the bad track right back into place and the same problem will come back.
Quote: i was just using jemplode and tried to use the download function, but after selecting a directory and saying ok, it returned me back to the main screen. i thought it was supposed to download all the mp3's...?
It's supposed to, depending on exactly what you clicked on. Check to see that you're running the latest Jemplode and the latest Java runtime. One other thing you can check is either activate or deactivate the "use hijack when possible" feature in the Jemplode options.

about jemplode, i didn't realize you have to select actual tracks then choose download. i had the unit itself selected, assuming it would get everything. an error message would be nice, or maybe a help file I have doubts about it being one or more bad tracks. I'm noticing that the moment i click the next or previous button, it hangs. I've tried 4 or 5 playlists. The download of songs seems to work - i've gotten several albums worth already. what else can i try to narrow this down? perhaps download all tracks, then rip a cd and upload only it?

Or any folder. Or (I think) a group of folders (ie, all top level folders).
Quote: I have doubts about it being one or more bad tracks. I'm noticing that the moment i click the next or previous button, it hangs. I've tried 4 or 5 playlists.
And these are all small playlists? Say, only one album each?
When you play only one track, does clicking the next/prev button make it hang?

yes, small playlists. i'm focusing on one album that i have played many times over the years. it is now intermittent, but here's what i have seen:
selecting an individual song works about half the time, half the time hangs with the name of the selected song highlighted, about to play. when it does work, hitting the next/prev button does NOT cause it to fail.
selecting the whole album starts playing about half the time, and when it does, will play the whole album (or at least the first two songs before i try something else) UNLESS i hit the next or previous button, in which case it dies every single time.
If i click down down down down so that every song plays, it will hang every single time.

It might be worthwhile to try and turn on the disk access indicator - see if it is failing when trying to read the hard drive.

I turned on the LED. The hard drive light came on with gray bar, then turned white when the audio started, then back to gray after 30 seconds or so. 10 minutes later and the grey bar is still there, meaning drive still spun up.
I've downloaded all the files (with no errors BTW) via jemplode, and i'm about ready to scrub and reload one chunk at a time. Is there a preferred method for this, or is it fine to simply delete every track?

Since hard disk trouble is suspected, then please do a full "Builder image" wipe, including the stress test, as described in the Disk Upgrade Guide.
Be sure to read the instructions carefully, especially the part about needing to press Enter in the shell to get it to actually build the disk (it's going to say disk is already built).

cool, i'll do that right now. is http://www.empeg.com/downloads/car2-builder-20011022.upgrade the builder i should use for my rio car? it says 'test builder' so i wanted to verify. Also, in hyperterminal, i discovered by accident that ctrl-C gets me to the shell prompt. is that how i should be doing it?

Okay. Break it and run the builder again. I suspect that this is the issue that I ran into previously, where the builder software is unable to completely build the drive. Please rerun the builder.

So are you letting it run the stress test?

yes now it's running the stress test and i'm headed to lunch. how exactly do i put the developer image on at this point? it says to do it with the unit 'still powered up' but it also says to pull the plug when you want to stop the stress test. which one comes first? in any case, i'll let it run for the next hour and look for your response when i come back

You put the developer image on the way you always do, same way you applied the builder image... double-click on the ".upgrade" file and follow the instructions.
Make sure you've left the serial terminal session running during the stress test, and check its scrollback for errors when you get back from lunch.

i was confused about the upgrade because of the wording in the instructions "with the new drive plugged in, install the developer image" but now i see that it means plugged into the IDE connector, since it's a dual drive configuration in the example. I put on the upgrade and the system is now clean. Any recommendations before I throw a few songs on it and give it a shot?

If the stress test showed no errors, then definitely do exactly that.

I put 3 albums on there and was able to zip through all of them with no problems. I'll put on 10 or so albums at a time, testing at each point, and see how it goes...
oh, and the stress test did not report any errors.

You could do the divide and conquer approach...
Put half your collection on, see how it goes.
If it's OK, put the other half on, see how that goes.
If it fails, then remove half or the new half and test again. And so on.
But if both halves go on and the player exhibits no symptoms, then the act of formatting your disk drive and installing fresh firmware is what solved the problem...

I put half on and it's failing again, now i'll remove half that, etc. as you've suggested. one thing is, i'm moving these files over a good fast ethernet connection, any idea why i'm only getting 400k/sec?

Yup, one of those files is simply corrupted. As soon as you narrow down which one, your problems will be solved.
Quote: one thing is, i'm moving these files over a good fast ethernet connection, any idea why i'm only getting 400k/sec?
The empeg is only 10mbps, and the hard disk access speed and protocol overheads reduce that even further. 400-700k per second sounds about average.
You could check and make sure you're getting full-duplex on that connection, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

you're not going to believe this, but i figured it out. it has nothing to do with any of my songs.
it's the Favorite Visual setting for DSP! As soon as I add a visual to the DSP setting, it starts failing. i remove it, it works again. i add them to fm, am, aux, and it works. add one to dsp it fails, remove it and it works. over and over again, this is repeatable.
in thinking back, i only changed that setting based on trying to fix what i didn't like about emphatic (remember, i'm the guy that wrote that long list of questions a couple of weeks ago).
so that's it, the Favorite Visual setting for DSP causes the unit to hang frequently.
any suggestion other than to not use it? i don't mind not using it.

Right, which is why I was asking the version number.
I mean, if we just went through this entire exercise because he was running alpha software, I would be extremely upset.
You don't just haul off and say "my system is crashing" when you're running alpha or beta software. You try the known-stable final release software first.

2.00 final both before and after the rebuilding of the drive. i've never used the alpha code but did use a number of the v2 beta code a couple of years ago.

Hm. Okay, one last question, then.
Do you have this problem?
PS: If you'd had this problem, it should have disappeared after you formatted the hard disk. The only way it would have come back is if you'd copied the config.ini off and tried to put it back again. Doing so would have been deviating from the test procedures we discussed above. If you're going to do that sort of thing when someone is giving you tech support, you really need to tell them about it.

No, I don't believe I have that issue. I'm currently in the middle of a 6 hour synchronize operation, so i can't check out the config.ini file right now, but I definitely didn't touch the config.ini file after the reformat.
And I can sympathize with your concern about me changing things along the way. I've been a professional hardware and software troubleshooter for the past 8 years, starting with building and repairing custom PCs in the mid 90s, then to high end storage (fibre channel disk arrays), and quite a bit of networking and home theater installing in between. I am currently doing level 3 tech support for EMC storage products at Dell and spend most of my day walking people through processes to fix their systems. I think I have sound troubleshooting methodologies and understand very well the need to follow a script. In this case, I'm only interested in making it work, by any means necessary. I had actually put 30 or 40 albums on and it was working, then I went and changed player options in emplode, and started putting more albums on it. When I tried it again, it was suddenly failing, and i made the false assumption that it was the new music. After the music came off, and it still failed, I began to suspect the player options.
I'm guessing there's some process in the background related to the visuals, even if you aren't using any, so that every time you change songs, it's changing visuals (or refreshing the visual). is there some way to completely delete all visuals? i've never found any use for bright flashing lights visible out of the corner of my eye while i'm driving...
Thanks for all your help and i would appreciate it if someone could try to reproduce the issue. I'll report back when all my data is copied back over and I get the chance to test it.

Okay, cool, just checking. Because with software version 2.0, the only previously known issue with Favorite Visuals is the one I linked.
As far as I know, there's no way to simply delete all visuals. But I also don't think there's any processing going on in the background for the visuals if you select "none" for the visual or if your on a text info screen. So you shouldn't need to worry about that.
This is very odd that the favorite visuals feature would be what crashes the player. Perhaps we could see exactly what was in your favorites list when the crash happens? Maybe it's something specific that we could reproduce on our players too.

oh, and the easy way to reproduce for me is to play all songs (down, down, down), then hit next track. i'm not sure what visual was actually active at that point, but the Info was set to 'track' so i never saw it anyway. also, i don't have the remote, so i definitely haen't even applied the 'favorite visuals' mode setting. so i don't see why it would even matter what favorites were in my list.
I'm going to leave the empeg at work overnight to finish syncing up, and if you want me to try anything tomorrow, just let me know.
On a separate note, shouldn't i be getting emails on replies? i verified my email address in my profile but don't remember choosing to get (or not to get) emails on replies.

Darn. Can't reproduce it with the same favorites list as you. Sigh. I was hoping we'd just found a new bug or something.
Well, anyhoo, you now know that:
- The favorites list as you've configured it, is what causes the problem for you.
- There's no need to configure a favorites list at all, you only need to set it to info:track or visual:off or whatever. So you can work around the bug.
So it means your problem is solved, even if we don't know why.
Regarding emails, I dunno how that works on the BBS, I've never used that feature.

You have to add a particular thread to your favourites if you want email responses. By default, this doesn't happen, AFAIK.

I finished putting all 4500 songs back on and everything worked fine. I added the 'off' visual back and it crashed, so i removed it and it worked again.
here's where it gets ugly. I manually changed the visual to 'off' and it froze. i powered it off and back on, and it hangs as soon as "Source: Player" appears on the screen, without even getting to the point where it's going to play a track (It says Plays=0 and [-/-] at the bottom.
so this means i can't change the visual! is there a way to break into the serial port and change the visual, or am i going to have to rebuild the image again?? agh!

I did add this thread to my favorites and i'm not getting notified. i checked my spam folder and there's nothing there. so either austin road runner is blocking it, or the function is broken.

Greetings!
Boot with the serial connection set up. As soon as it starts to load the player, hit control-c. This will kill the player. Then run it from command line with "player -i". This should start the player with no playlist in place. I am not sure if it will work or not (not a bad file, but a bad visual), but it is worth a try.
Are you running any versions of hijack along with your 2.0? Just curious.

awesome, thanks! that did it.
no, i haven't put hijack back on yet after the rebuild, but i'm going to do that now.
I just went back to narrow down this problem, and here's what i've found:
i added every single visual to my favorites INCLUDING 'off' then it worked.
removed everything BUT 'off' then it still works.
removed 'off' it still works.
added back 'off' as the only favorite and after a mysterious media scan, it still works.
so at this point, everything works - including 'off' both selected manually or added to the visual favorites list. the ONLY thing i've done since it was failing is to run 'player -i'...is there any chance this could have 'fixed' something??

Hmmm... I have never seen OFF before used in conjunction with favorite visuals. I wonder...
The player -i starts the player application without any startup information (current playlist, settings, info / visual screens). I cannot think of anything it would fix that would survive a rebuild, though, unless there was something really wacky in your scratch or dynamic data partitions.
