I stumbled across a website that celebrates "Truck Driver's Gear Change", otherwise know as an obvious musical key change. I am pleased to say that Terry Jack's "Seasons in the Sun" gets a mention:

It's good to see the sheer number of Westlife songs in the list. They were the first example that sprung to mind, always particularly noticable as they stand up when it happens.

Interesting inclusion of KPMG, it took me by surprise why any band would name themselves after a bunch of accountants, until I realised it actually was KPMG.

Almost never a good idea for any company to commission uplifting songs. Anyone remember 'Octane' by Silicon Graphics?

I just hope we never get asked to produce one for our firm (another one of the big 4) 'cos they would end up getting me involved, and that would just be embarrassing...

Oh man, there is such a thing as too much information...I will never be able to listen to a song that has one of those the same way again. Ignorance was bliss.

I (shamefully) don't have a copy of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life", but, at the very least, the clip he has on the site has no key modulation at all. There's a little higher-range vocal flourish, but the key never changes.

I'm inclined to say that this guy's an idiot with an obsession.

Plus, he claims that the Seinfeld theme was written by Les Claypool (of Primus fame) because a bunch of people claimed that it was. Ignoring the fact that it sounds only very vaguely like Les Claypool (or perhaps all slap bass is Les Claypool?), it would have taken like five minutes to verify that it was written (and probably performed) by Jonathan Wolff, an established TV composer.

I'd agree. I don't see what the issue is with key changes. What IS annoying is endless chorus repeates, and sometimes a key modulation is used to justify this, but in many cases a nicely set up modulation can be a good tool for hightening the intensity of the song. And a modulation you have to pay attention to hear (like some he lists) is just impressive musicianship.

But if he wants to have a field day he should just go out and buy some Praise and Worship albums. Modern P/W is notorious for modulating all over the place (we play at least one song with a modulation every Sunday at my church).

Don't ask me why it's popular, but one of this summers top songs here in Sweden consists of almost nothing but "Hej" and "Monika" (Hi/hello and Monica), and what little else there is, is completely inane...
Bleeeccchhh! There's a reason I don't listen much to the radio...

Complete lyrics:

Moooonika
Hej Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika

Kalla blickar, kalla kårar
och du var bara 14 vårar
ta min hand och visa mig vägen
Jag är din i alla lägen

Hej Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika

Känns som vår kärlek kom på sne från början
Precis som lutande tornet i Pisa
Tror det står där än idag
och här står du och här står jag

Hej Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika

Hej! hej! hej! Monika
Hej! hej! hej! Monika
Hej! hej! hej! Monika
Hej! hej! hej! Monika

Mooonika
Hej Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika

Hej Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika
Hej Monika
Hej på dig Monika

Hej hej Monika
Hej hej Monika
Hej hej Monika
Hej Monika
Hej Monika
Hej Monika

Is there any Bill Clinton footage in the video, by any chance?

And has anyone else been reading this thread with a mental picture of the spaniel pianist from The Muppet Show turning to the camera in the middle of a recital and saying, "We call this, a modulation..."?

Peter

LOL! No, nothing like that... Video's just as boring as the lyrics.

Heh. I used to listen to an album by Rowlf (said canine pianist) called "Old Brown Ears Is Back", and there was one song on it that had a pretty severe key change, and right when it happens, he yells out "moduLATE!". I still say that after not having heard the album for like 8 years.

Paul, you think you have problems? Thanks to that damn website I've been walking around for the past day humming "Crazy Crazy Nights."

Um, well, I guess KPMG might be worse -- but it's debatable!

Fortunately, I was rescued a few hours later. One of the folks in my office started downloading / streaming from my player and found Blues Traveler - Canadian Rose. That drove the other completely out of mind.

I do, however, sympathize.
