not really, unless you _really_ need it back. the empeg built in software is designed to discourage downloading of mp3's from the system. about the only way I can think of would be to lookup in the database the track ID number, and send it zmodem over the serial port... or to install some kind of FTP server on the empeg. I don't know what it would take to do it over USB.

I am trying to do just that, but by trying to setup an ftp server on the empeg, so far all I have been able to find is to get a PPP enable kernel on the unit. This has proven difficult as the developer site has the required info, as well as a kernel update file, but alas it is for the Mk1, rendering my Mk2 rather useless. Plus the steps required, from what I can tell, to get PPP working on a Mk2, are way beyond my linux abilities. So I am wondering if the Mk1 pppkernel.update file, is convertable to a MK2 file.

Tony, can I assume you have PPP working on your Mk1, for your data transfer requirements? Do you have any ideas on how to get PPP running on a Mk2, or do you know of anyone who does have PPP running on a Mk2, and is it possible for them to export their kernel into an upgrade file and use emplode to ram their kernel onto my(other) empeg(s)?

For the obvious reason of running an ftp service on the empeg, I would also like to use my empeg to shuttle data from home to work, primarily for the stuff that is far too big for email, and for secure transfer between sites.

If you have a MK2 why are you trying to setup PPP ? Why don't you just use the ethernet port ?

I would like to do that, but at the current time I do not know how. I currently don't have a solution that would allow my Empeg to work as a USB taxi drive. The best option seems to be a modification of the Emptool sources, but I haven't done anything more than just asking about the subject on the BBS.

DIsplayserver currently only works over TCP/IP, so you must use ethernet or PPP over serial line.
Maybe an idea : inlcude a link in displayserver which will generate a large tar-file with all the fids in it...
Once you click it, you can save it on your local computer ; hmm, next release...

- First install a developer image

- download the install.sh file from my web-site : http://empeg.dyndns.org/empeg/displayserver1.1

- connect the empeg through serial to your PC

- start hyperterminal ( or some other sort of terminal-emulation )

- boot the empeg

- press q in hyperterm if empeg has booted

- type : rw

- type : cd /

- use the send file option in hyperterm to copy the install.sh file to your empeg

- type : chmod +x install.sh

- type : ./install.sh

- answer the questions asked.

- reboot the empeg...

- open webbrowser and use URL : http://<ip-address of your empeg>

Wasn't empeg thinking of making this possible at one point? I thought they said that due to the outcome of the RIAA's lawsuit against S3, they were looking at making it possible to transfer mp3's onto the computer.

I never did get an answer when I brought this up with Rob...

It'd be great if I could download it. The link from up above does not seem to work... Correct me if I'm wrong:

You're right; As a result of installing a new(old) server I renamed the directory.
The correct url should be : http://empeg.dyndns.org/empeg/displayserver1.1

It seemed relatively simple, so 1.1 includes a link which will let you save a tar file with the complete contents of /drive0 and /drive1 on your local computer...
Be sure to have enough disk-space though, as one huge file will be generated.
Downloading is quite fast (+/- 400Kb/sec)

What are the odds of this sort of thing ever working over USB connected to a Windows box? (Says the man with the Mark 1.)

Speaking of - why do downloads top out at 400kb/sec? FTP downloads from the empeg top out above 1mb/sec...

Once ppp is running over USB... (unfortunately).
I cannot see any other way to use a web-browser over USB...

The 400Kb was over my old Coaxial network at home. I have some old hardware which is connected to a coax hub. On the coax hub there is an aui-port which connects to the empeg.
FTP-transfers also top at about 400Kb...
If you use a full-duplex UTP-hub you could get as far as 1.2Mb/s, also with displayserver, as it uses a standard TCP-connection.

Do I understand this correctly... would this work as a backup utility for the empeg that would create a mirror image on my local (Windows 98) PC and allow me to restore that image to the empeg, complete with playlists and database information?

Once ppp is running over USB... (unfortunately).

As I understand it, enabling PPP-over-USB is possible in the Empeg kernel, right? The only problem is that there's no Windows driver for connecting to it from a Windows box. Is this a correct assessment of the situation?

If the USB-port on the empeg would act like a serial port, PPP over USB wouldn't be a problem. USB is still something new to me, certainly on win32, so I cannot help you out here.

Update; I've got my win2k box talking to the empeg over USB. My plan is to write a small TCP-server on the windows box listening at port xxx. when a client connects to it, the connection will be forwarded over USB to port 80 on the empeg. Unfortunately the player app also listens on USB. Is there a way to disable USB in the player app?

Well, I spent an evening searching the web for USB-specs when I stumbled on windriver/USB, which is a tool for developing device-drivers. It did automatically detect the empeg and show the available pipes:
Pipe00 : Type:control transport:in/out packet size:16
Pipe02 : Type:bulk transport:out packet size:64
Pipe03 : Type:bulk transport:out packet size:64
Pipe82 : Type:bulk transport:in packet size:64

It then let's you try sending/receiving bytes to the available pipes.
I tested with :

# cat /dev/usb0

on the empeg, which gave me the bytes I transmitted at the win2k end on pipe 02

also:

# echo test > dev/usb0

showed the correct bytes at the windows end on pipe 82

Windriver then let's you generate C/C++/Delphi Code with all the basic functions to communicate over these pipes.

NOTE: all communication was done with the player-app shut down.
when the player is running, half of the bytes sent are lost/read by the player app.
I tried to fake the /dev/usb0 device by replacing it with a file, but then the player really freaks out...

Can you tell me where to get this WinDriver/USB from? I'm wanting to write a program to run my D-Link USB Radio that doesn't have its bogus record features...
