I live in NJ, USA, and let me tell you, it can get cold here, especially at night. The past few nights, its been in the 20's and i was wondering what other people do about taking their empeg out of their car.

You see, last winter, I kept taking my empeg I out of the car when I got home, and sometimes when I got to the office. I did this just about every day. But I’m thinking that taking it out and putting it in will wear out the sled and maybe the connectors in the back. But then the thought of keeping it in the car, while its that cold, will make me feel like I left my child out in the cold. I mean, lets be real, how cold can the empeg withstand before the low temp begins to harm it, or do permanent damage? (don’t forget: cold, then warm, metal expanding, and contracting.)

Do you guys take your empeg out each day during the winter?

You should remove it if the environment is likely to be hostile (too hot/too cold). The connectors are very high quality (= extremely expensive) and gold plated, so there shouldn't be problems. The mk1's connectors did suffer a little (even though they were expensive & gold plated too) but the mk2 connector seems to have a better mechanical design.

I've had my Mk1 for nearly a year now, and I remove it from the car constantly. At home, at the office, when I go to lunch, when I go to the store, etc. It probably goes through 15-20 removals a week. It's still working fine.

I did have a little trouble with the connector for a while, but a really good cleaning seems to have solved the problem.

So, to answer the original question: Yes, if the outside temperatures are extreme, it's better to remove the Empeg. Don't worry about the connectors, worry about the hard drives.

I think best to remove the unit anyway, to take temptation away from someone trying to get their mits on your pride and joy.

Only installed the drives last night so no chance to fill them yet. Pictures are available here Gotta find time to get the rest of my CD collection onto it over the next few weeks.

Congratulations, you have the largest capacity empeg in the world (unless anyone cares to claim otherwise!).

I did the easy bit. The hard part must have been designing a car unit using twin 2.5" drives that the industry clearly would continue to develop into every increasing capacities.

Thanks for the pics, good number of them for us who don't want to open our prescious empeg.

Damn that circuit layout looks awesome!!

Could these pics be used in the drive installation FAQ?

(but if you update your site, could you maybe make the thumbnail files smaller for the few of us with normal phone modems and no access to cable/DSL/T3 connections?)

IMHO those pics do eventually show on a 56k line. For people with better bandwidth, they can click and get full size images. If anyone wants to grab them and use them for FAQ thats fine by me.

Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for the two drives?
