When I switch my empeg from my stereo to my car it seems to "forget" that I turned the Info to |None" -> i want visuals (Hulla Hop Rings - which are my favorite). When I power it up again it starts with the Info set to "Next&Track"??? Have I misunderstood something? Why doesn't it remember my last settings?

Hehe, maybe we should put a permanent sentence-long link at the top of the page:

When I turn my car on, my empeg doesn't return to the visual I had running

Actually, i think it needs to be prominent in the BBS sign up page or somewhere else that new users should READ THE FAQs before posting questions to the board. Maybe a blurb in the email or in the sign up page? I have the feeling that it wouldn't make much of a difference though as there are many people who know they will get a faster response by posting a question than taking the time to look through the BBS for an answer. *sigh*

Has anyone coded a hack to fix this in a developer image?
This way Empeg would clearly not be responsible when you drove into a tree while watching funnelweb. (without selecting it manually)

Has anyone coded a hack to fix this in a developer image?

Since the behavior is governed by the player code (not the kernel), and the player is not open-source (like the kernel is), it would be difficult to hack.

That's not to say it can't be done, it's just that someone would have to reverse-engineer the behavior at the machine code level and perform the hack in binary. I'm sure it's not beyond the talents of some of the folks on this board, but I dunno if those folks would be willing to waste that kind of time on something so difficult.

Remember that one button press gets you back to the visuals, it's not that big of a deal, not worth all that effort.

If you install the kernel with IR-hack, you could just generate this key-press from a shell-script...

Anyone care to do this?
Or type some simple instructions?
I do not know any unix (yes, shame) And are only NT centric.
I realize it's not a big deal to push the button, but it sure would be nice not to hit it and hold it..... every time I start the vehicle.

P.S. the picture's cool!

I don't know Tony, don't underestimate. I agree, it's an incredible waste of time compared to a simple one button press, but I wouldn't put it past anyone.

I've only tested it on a mk2 with 1.01 developer.

Um, okay, so I stand corrected.

I honestly thought the visuals and info screens were under control of the player, not the kernel. Sorry.

As was I... but this patch appears to work by squirting the codes for the necessary button presses into the kernel's IR input buffer.

Funny, I find it to be less of a nuisance and more of a convenience. I like the fact that I know which track is playing when I get in my car. I usually keep the Now & Next on anyway.

I wish it would default to now and next instead of the track info screen.

Um, it does.

If your last info screen was "Now And Next", it goes to that when you apply power in the car. If your last info screen was "Info: Track" then it goes to that when you apply power in the car.

That's a feature I specifically requested. Last I checked, it was working in the software just fine without a problem. If you can methodically reproduce a situation where this doesn't happen, then report it as a bug.

When I have now and next selected as my info mode and switch to info off using the down key, the player reboots to the track info screen.

It's not supposed to do that. It didn't do that when they first implemented the feature. If you're certain about that behavior, report it officially as a bug.

I can't test this myself right now as I can't head out to my car just this moment.

That's what it does, though. The player only stores the last info mode in flash, not the last mode before you switched to "info off" with the down key. So when you boot it in the above scenario, it only sees that the last mode was "info off" and switches to "info track".

I'm afraid he's right, Tony. I just tested it out too. It will return to Now & Next if the player is turned on from standby, or if you return from visuals using the down arrow key, but if the player is rebooting, not from standby, it boots to the track info screen.

Let me clarify.

There are three ways you can switch to "info off":

1. select a new info mode from the menus;
2. cycle through the info modes with CD-MD-CH on the remote or 's' on the serial console;
3. hold the bottom button while in another info mode (call it X).

If you are currently in "info off" and you hold the bottom button, which info mode you end up in depends on how you selected "info off" in the first place. If 1 or 2, you get "info track". If 3, you get X.

Switching to and from standby doesn't affect this behaviour. After a full reboot in the car, the player insists on switching to "info track" or "info now&next". If the last info mode was one of these two, then it is preserved. If the last info mode was "info off" or "info line", then it switches to "info track".

The issue Sean is having is this: you start with "info now&next" and switch to "off" as in 3 above. Reboot in the car. Ideally, you should get back to "info now&next". However, the player doesn't preserve the value of X across reboots, so it switches to "info track". If instead you reboot at home, you get "info off" to start with, but holding the bottom button switches to "info track" for the same reason.

Unless I got it wrong, of course.

Borislav

Yeah, I just verified this one myself on the way home tonight.

Someone from Empeg will probably jump in here and correct me, but I could SWEAR that it used to remember the last info screen across a power-pull.

Then again, I'm turning into an old fart and they say memory is the first thing to go.

When I have now and next selected as my info mode and switch to info off using the down key, the player reboots to the track info screen.

I have a new version of the "don't switch to info track in the car" kernel hack that should fix this. It remembers the last non-off info mode across reboots (both in the car and at home).

I'd be interested to know if it works, on a mk1 in particular (since I only have a mk2).
