... but now there's a study to back that:

From BoingBoing, Cory Doctorow's weblog:
Koleman Strumpf, a conservative, Cato-affiliated economist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has just co-authored a paper on the effects of file-sharing on album sales, based on the first-ever empirical data analysis in the field.

[....]

Even in the most pessimistic specification, five thousand downloads are needed to displace a single album sale...high selling albums actually benefit from file sharing.

I'm not saying you or the article are wrong, but
a conservative ... at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
invokes quite a bit of cognitive dissonance.

So file sharing has nothing to do with this then

Are you being sarcastic?

And Bitt, if it makes you fell better I think the study was done in cooperation with Harvard TechTV reported on this last night.

I wouldn't know about that. All I know about US university politics was gathered from sources like The Strawberry Statement or Zabriskie Point, which cannot be accused of being recent, complete, unbiased or generally relevant.

UNC-CH is one of the oldest (and my be the oldest) public (meaning government-funded) college in the US. It's mostly known as a liberal arts school, and it's full of artsy-fartsy types. The idea of a conservative economist there just doesn't jibe with the image of the school. It's not really politics so much as image.

"[EMI] also said on Wednesday recorded music sales in the year to end-March 2004 held close to the previous year's levels..."

Nope, apparently not.

Long live Leon Festinger... I didn't know anyone even knew who he was anymore.
