Well, I was just uploading a bunch of new music and while this was going on, I was doing some other stuff with my computer. My computer crashed during the sync and I had to pull the plug on the empeg. Plugged empeg back in and it said there were no playlists. Tried to connect to emplode and it hung, so I did the fsck thing. Got it to connect to emplode and synched it thinking my playlists would be back but they aren't, and there is nothing in the soup views either. It still says there is disk space being used so I know my songs are still there, I just dont know how to get to them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings!
Some questions, in order:
a) Are you running the developer kernel? 2.0?
b) If so, go into shell. Do you have anything in /drive0/fids and /drive1/fids (if dual disk)?
c) If so, you might be able to manually rebuild the databases by:
rw
rwm
player
(quit the player application after it finishes loading - it will take a while to rebuild the database, playlists and tags files)
rom
ro
exit
reboot, resync
d) If /drive0/fids is EMPTY, there is something nasty going on, and it will need a bit more effort.

In emplode, do an "Advanced Search" for "refs=0". That will show all of the songs that are no currently in playlists... does this help?

Please check here to see if it's that problem, make sure you're not having problems like this, then try this procedure.

Here is what happened with each of these ideas...
Tony, at the moment I currently only have one drive and I'm pretty sure my cable is fine. When I followed the procedure in your last link, the database wasn't rebuilt when I exited out of shell. It just booted up with no playlists.
Brad, refs=0 returned no search results.
Paul, yes, there are files in drive0/fids but still nothing after running player.
and on a semi related note, is it normal to see this when doing the fsck Parallelizing fsck version 1.19 (13-Jul-2000)

Did you have the drives mounted read/write when you ran the player executable from shell?

Yes, I typed in exactly what you showed. What exactly is the player executable supposed to do. All it seemed to do was reboot the empeg like normal, except it went straight back to the blue led blinking so it went straight back to the shell. Am I just not waiting long enough or something? And what do you mean quit the player application, it seemed to quit by itself for me? I must be doing something wrong.
edit: I just tried this again, and this time it didn't go back to the shell after player was run, it just rebooted like normal. All player seems to do for me is reboot.

Greetings!
Okay. From a fresh boot, going into the shell, changing the disks to read/write and running the player application will look like a boot - or at least a player start...
Oh! My error.
I think you have a corrupted database file. The goal here was to rewrite the database / tags / playlists files. Try the following...
a) boot
b) drop to shell
c) rw
d) rwm
e) cd /drive0/var
f) mv playlists playlists.old [get the old, possibly bad files out of the way]
g) mv database database.old
h) mv tags tags.old
i) player [this should take a lot longer, as it will regenerate the files we renamed above]
j) q [exit the player app, back to your original shell]
k) ls /drive0/var [hopefully, you should see both sets - the newly created files and the .old files]
l) rom
m) ro
n) exit [hopefully, you will now see the playlists through the player app]
o) reboot [final check]

I just did everything exactly as you said. When player was executed, it didn't take any longer than before. When I looked in /drive0/var, yes, the old and the new files are there. Still no playlists though . This is getting very frustrating. I'm very busy and really dont want to have to spend the time to rerip everything. What could I have possibly done to make my empeg so mad at me. I just wish it would cooperate. There has to be something I can do to get my music back. The silence in my car is killing me.

What could I have possibly done to make my empeg so mad at me. Let's rewind a bit and do some sanity checks.
Player software version?
Running any third party programs?
What's config.ini look like? Got the beta 11 bug by any chance?

Player software version? 2.00 Running any third party programs? I did have emphatic and roadmap+gpsapp installed but due to the hijack app starting bug, could only run one of these at a time. So I only had the EXEC for one of them at a time in the config.ini What's config.ini look like? [synchronise]
seq_num=9
[wendy]
flag_amount=0
[custom]
wendy=
[searches]
amount=0
[VisualFavourites_AM]
count=0
[VisualFavourites_AUX]
count=0
[VisualFavourites_DSP]
count=0
[VisualFavourites_FM]
count=0
hmmm...very odd....There used to be a lot more stuff there. Everything on my empeg has been reset after looking around a little. My sound settings are gone (eq, balance, fader, etc.), my name and phone number are gone, and everything I had in my config.ini file is gone. Its like a brand new empeg would be that you just pulled out of the box except that when I open emplode, it says I only have 497MB free space, and there is a bunch of stuff in /drive0/fids.

So I only had the EXEC for one of them at a time in the config.ini Was this with the ;@DC modifier? A lot of problems with synchronizing can be caused by the inability of the player to do the proper things to the disk drives because the third party apps have got files on the drives locked open.

Yes, this was with @DC, but this couldn't be a problem now, even if it was before, because my config.ini has been reset. It doesn't seem to be a synchronizing problem that I'm having. It is perfectly happy when syncing with emplode. The only thing wrong is that there are no playlists or songs.

Yeah, that's really strange, there's gotta be a way to get that stuff back. The files are there, it's just that some sort of root link is missing I guess.

You might have said this already, so I apologise.
Are there any songs visible in emplode at all? I mean in the Soup views? Alternatively go to the Search tab and enter 'true' without the quotes. This should return everything on the player, tunes and playlists alike.

No, there are no songs visible in emplode at all, not in the playlists, and not in the soup views. A search for true returned nothing exept a folder called all music which was empty.

OK. So it appears that you've either got a corrupted database (unlikely because you followed Paul's steps to rebuild it), or disk corruption has done something nasty.
Can you:
ls -l /drive0/fids
ls -l /drive1/fids
and post the output? Does the number of files listed look anything like the number of tracks you're expecting to see?

To post the entire output of /drive0/fids would be huge so I am just going to post a sample of it. -rw-r--r-- 1 0 0 6303744 Aug 28 21:18 ff70

Okay, so the *0 and *1 files are both there for all the songs.
Are there any critical files, like some kind of root index file, that must be present in order for the soups to appear on the player? I know there must be a root playlist, but even without that shouldn't soups appear?

It would take a while... but couldn't you FTP all the fid's off the drive, wipe it, reinstall, copy them back, then do a database rebuild?

So is the general consensus that I should ftp the fids to my computer, run the builder on the empeg, then put the fids back? If so, I'll have to see if I can scrounge up a crossover cable somewhere. I've just been using usb for the last few months since I'm on a school network now instead of a home network with a router. Either that or see if one of my roomates doesn't mind having their computer offline for a while.

Running any third party programs? I did have emphatic and roadmap+gpsapp installed but due to the hijack app starting bug So you are running Hijack? Could you try doing Paul's instructions (the "rwm" and ".old" stuff) on a stock Empeg Ltd kernel? What's the output of "ls -ld /drive0/fids/_*" (that's an underscore before the star)? What about "ls -l /drive0/fids/_*" (i.e. without the "d")?

Nope. There _might_ be some oddness if FID 100 and FID 110 don't exist, but emplode should recreate these if necessary.
And, as you say, this shouldn't affect the soup views in emplode at all. emplode downloads a list of the tunes available, and then laces them together into playlists. Searches just apply to the list of tunes.

Ooh, ooh, a thought occurs to me.
Can you get the results of:
ls -ld /empeg/fids0
ls -ld /empeg/fids1
ls -l /empeg/fids0
ls -l /empeg/fids1
For that is actually how the empeg gets to the tunes. If the symlinks are missing, it'll not find anything.
Alternatively, reapplying a developer upgrade file will fix the symlinks anyway.

Peter, yes, I'm running hijack. Is the best way to get rid of this just to reinstall the developer image? Yes. This is a good idea anyway, as it'll fix anything that's gone screwy in the root filesystem.

Wait, did you run fidsift on this thing? Are we looking at some kind of problem with fidsift?

Unfortunately, I see a distinct lack of audio files there. Or is it just my imagination.

I just reinstalled the developer image to get rid of anything screwy and also get rid of hijack. I then repeated Paul's instructions with the .old stuff. When I executed player, this time it did take a while to build the database, I then rebooted and nothing. Fired up emplode for the heck of it and sure enough, my songs are there. A quick sync with emplode and hip hip horay, the silence in my car is gone.
I would like to thank everyone involved in helping me with this. My knowledge of linux is very limited and without you're help, I would be completely lost. You've saved me from spending hours and hours reripping. I know this has been said many times before, but once again, the empeg community pulls though and proves to be the best web community out there. I just wish there was more that I could contribute, the vast majority of my posts have been me asking for help. Thanks again!

Unfortunately, I see a distinct lack of audio files there. Or is it just my imagination. Right, there's no audio files in his split directories. But there are loads in his actual fids0 and fids1 directories, where the 2.0 player should still be finding them.

Funny thing is, I had my entire music collection on my computer until about 2 days before this happened. I've always had it on my computer until recently when I was running out of room. I dont have the funds at the moment to get a new hard drive so I figured that with my music on the empeg, I didn't need it on the computer also so I deleted it. After this incident though, I will recheck the funds and rethink the buying a new hardrive idea.

I'm glad you're working again, but I'm still wondering what got lost which caused this problem in the first place...
What would cause the player to NOT rebuild the database if the FIDs are there?

What would cause the player to NOT rebuild the database if the FIDs are there? The root-filesystem symlinks looked fine, and indeed emplode appeared able to make new 100 and 110 fid files correctly. I wonder whether hijack_mangle_fids() is doing the right thing -- does it work in the case where the subdir exists but the file isn't in it? That's a perfectly valid state for a recently-upgraded-to-v3 unit to be in, and the player copes with it fine. What version of Hijack did you have installed, kswish0?

Congrats on getting it all worked out! I'm kinda surprised that it took 3 pages to get you to reinstall the player software. I think we like making things more complicated than they need to be sometimes. But yes, I think it's in everyone's best interest that we find the cause of this...

My empeg has been perfectly happy ever since I got this all figured out...until today. I finally got some time in my busy schedule to reinstall hijack and put some apps back on my player. So I just reinstalled hijack v345 and it no longer plays music. All of the playlists are still there this time, it just wont play them. The song that was currently playing when I first booted up had the triangle in the bottom left like it was playing, but it wasn't. I tried to pause it, but when, I pressed the top button on the face, it didn't change to the pause symbol, it stayed a triangle. The time elaspsed time for the song isn't playing though. I then tried to pick a new song. I went through my playlists and picked a new one to play and when i selected it, it just displayed the hourglass. I finally had to just pull the plug because it never actually started playing the song, the hourglass just stayed there. My last problem was solved by reinstalling the developer image and getting rid of hijack 345, now reinstalling hijack caused a different problem. Why does v345 not get along with my player? I've never had problems with any of the other versions of hijack.

I reinstalled 2.00 to get rid of hijack and everything worked perfectly fine again. Then I downloaded a new hijack file incase my old one was corrupt, and reinstalled it. Same problem again. It says its playing, but it really isn't. Why is hijack causing this screwyness for me? Does someone have an older version I could try? Or is there something else I should be doing? I must have messed something up in the process of trying to get my playlists back.

Very weird, this. I don't know what is causing the subdirs to be created, but the solution is simple. I've altered Hijack so that it no longer blocks the player's view of the flat directory when subdirs also exist.
Hijack v346 will be released shortly, and should eliminate any problems I've seen discussed thus far in this thread.
Cheers

Tony, does this behavior resemble how the player acts if it's trying to play a song that isn't on the player anymore (yet it thinks the song was not deleted or moved)? I seem to remember something like this... maybe it was when I deleted a visual file (like escher.raw) without replacing it and the player tried to load it...

You just need to redo the database build now. Delete the old database files and resync as per the FAQ.
But I'll be releasing v347 shortly, because v346 broke the built-in webserver's access to playlists.

Oh man, this player s/w is totally fscked in places. During "normal" bootup and playback operation, it still tries to open files with O_CREAT.. on a read-only filesystem. I wonder why it does that?
Makes it really tricky. Because ideally, Hijack should only do the name remapping (aka "mangling" for files being newly created, not for access to existing files. But since there doesn't appear to be a reasonable way to detect this, I dunno..

I deleted the old database files and rebooted. Now I'm trying to sync but emplode wont find the player. What can I do to make emplode recognize my player so that I can sync and permanently rebuild the database.

Yes, that is exactly what I followed. But it is rebuilding the database everytime I reboot. If I could sync, it would fix this right?

But it is rebuilding the database everytime I reboot. Those steps (if followed precisely, especially/specifically the EXIT command) are supposed to rebuild the database and fix the problem, thus making it so that you don't have to do a synch.
The part of the synch that fixes the database is where it runs the player software with the drives read-write. Should be the same thing.
What is happening when you hit that command? Can you send us a serial log of exactly what you're typing and what's coming back out?

You sure you did the "rwm" command?
Did you check that the database file etc got created on the disk at the end of the procedure? Do the initial rwm, cd to the directory the database is in, then do 'touch foo', 'ls -l' and compare the file creation times between the database and the 'foo' file you just created (in case your clock & date is off) and see when the database file was created... You can then do 'rm foo'. Then decide if you want to continue to delete and recreate the database again (probably if the date/timestamp is off from when you did the procedure before) ie do the rm commands, exit, q etc according to the FAQ , or just do 'rom' to mount the drive readonly again.
