okay converted loads of my CDs into flacs and then into mp3s
Now i have 26gig to upload Now if memory serves me correct emplode sticks each upload onto the disc with most space so if i was to do it one hit would i end up with one very full drive and one very empety drive.
Also how long is this going to take to squirt into empeg over ethernet

Bear in mind that if you're doing a continuous upload, the empeg will be running its hard disks constantly. It'll get quite warm. It should be OK at room temperature, but make sure that it's not anywhere too warm.

i too am contemplating the whole re-rip to flac and then to mp3/wma. which programs did you use for it?
the only problem i have is that since getting an empeg i have become very disrespectfull to my cds and generally just let anyone borrow them and never get round to getting them back. consequently i don't have a clue where they are.
but i do believe that FLACing the whole lot is a very good idea. imagine how good it will be in future when a new compression format is released and you can just press a button, wait a very long time, and have all your music in that format.
btw, who do you fix big engines for in aberdeen? one of my friends (also an empeg owner) is living there at the moment - works for schlumberger - although he spends most of his life off shore as opposed to in aberdeen.

Because when another compressed format comes out, you don't need to re-rip everything again. You just convert the FLAC files (which are lossless) to the new format.

What is the advantage of re-ripping everything in FLAC and then converting to MP3? The advantage of ripping to to FLAC is that you will never have to re-rip your CDs again. FLAC is lossless so once you collection is in that format you can re-encode to anything.
Suppose your empeg has a 10GB drive in it today. You may encode your MP3s to 128k so you can fit your whole collection on there. Once you upgrade your drive to 80GB you would now have room for higher quality MP3s. Would you rather re-rip all your CDs or just run a batch re-encode on your FLAC files?

Ok, thanks. But my MP3 collection currently takes up 30Gb. If I FLAC my CD's I'm guessing the FLAC files will take up much much more room.

Or because you may want to consider using directly flac files on your empeg when you get a large enough hdd - so that you keep cd quality music in your car - and convert from those to mp3s for other players (except for karma  ) which do not support flac (yet?). That's what I am planning to do when I upgrade my empeg drives, for example...

If only the empeg's USB was 2.0 and the NIC was gigabit....

94.3 gig of flacs 3538 files
31.2 gig of Mp3s 4483 files since some nicked from mates etc over the years
i can say this as the RIAA helicopters can't get past the fireworks tonight

i'm just thinking, with all this transferring of huge amounts of data going on, is there any way to connect the drive(s) directly to your computer (using a 2.5" -> 3.5" cable) and then copy the data straight across.
i guess the uploading software would require some changes but it would be so much quicker for inital music uploads.

I am of the thinking that this is not done very often so time spent buggering around would really be wasted when you can start a transfer and go to bed, walk the dog , watch the telly.
As to my methods i am going to post later what i have been doing. just need to get all the links together etc.

Yes I agree that tranferring FLAC to the empeg is going to be a long long process. I think I'd be willing to do that anyway, since it's something you do once. After that first huge upload, adding one cd or two at rthe time shoudl not be that bad, after all...
BTW, has anybody succeeded in uploadiung FLAC files to the empeg with 3.0alpha? I haven't... ?!

Ok I know that flac is lossless but I tried to make a flac file and a 30 meg song was only cut down too 23 megs am I doing somthing wrong? The same song as an mp3 192vbr is 5 megs, at that rate I will need a BIIIIG hard drive for all of my songs.

3500 files and it gives me 95 gig
Me thinks time to rethink plan of putting them on DVD
Options are a raid thingy but this sounds complex therefore more likely to go tits up
Is there a nice simple way that i could build a second machine from bits hanging around and do a back up once in a while over ethernet.
Or should i get another hard disc and every once in a while plug that into computer and squirt across files and then remove and put it back in its box ?
