Hey all. Recently, during an attempt to load a 4 gig batch of MP3s to my player, emplode failed. Hey, no problem, my fault for uploading 4 gig at once. But, it's worse than that.

Now, any time I try to sync, I get:
The synchronisation process failed during stage 2:
Error 0xfffffff8

The player works fine at home and in the car. I listened to 5 hours of music today on it.

Yes, I am still using emplode and player software 1.03. Why? Because I read somewhere that 1.03 was the MOST stable software for uploading huge batches of files, which I'm still doing.

An old thread blames this on "making /etc/mtab a symlink to /proc/mounts.".

Is there a fix for this? Do I need to HyperTerm in and use "ln" to break the link (which I have NO idea how to do)? Should I just reaload 1.03 on the empeg? Um, and how can I do that without loosing my settings, eq's, database, and playlists?

Thanks so much for your help.

have you tried going up to 2.0 final and then seeing what happens ?

I did many big transfers with 2.0 and okay 2.0 never eaten a disk that i know of so give that a spin.

I believe the "stable 1.03 for uploads" myth should have been killed off long ago. I have regularly dumped 18GB+ to my players with v2beta13 and v2final with nary an issue.

On the other hand, I *did* have numerous problems syncing with earlier software releases, especially before discovering (and fixing) the "jiffies" issue present in all player software prior to (roughly) v2beta11.

Cheers

In addition to what Mark said, the ethernet has gotten considerably faster since 1.03. If you have Mark's laterst HiJack and Database "FidSift" mod, your database rebuilds will be faster too..

Yes, please upgrade both Emplode and Player to version 2.0 final.

The "1.03 is more stable" thing only counted when 2.0 was in beta11 and earlier. 2.0 beta13 and 2.0 final are/were very stable.

Ok, so 1.03 was better than 2.0b11. And HiJack will help 2.0final run even better. Thanks for the advice.

Rrrr, but now I return to the only OTHER reason why I stuck with 1.03:
Entering the Info, Visuals, and Shuffle menus does not start on the currently selected item.

This makes it impossible to switch between modes without looking, and difficult even when looking.
Can I put in a bug report for 3.0alpha in advance (though I haven't checked it)? But that's for another thread.

Ok, so I upgraded to 2.0final and did some syncs. It found some corrupt folders which I removed. But it "checked file system" (fsck?) each time I did the sync. Oh well, at least it worked.

Then, much to the dismay of everyone here, I downgraded back to 1.03. I ran a sync from Emplode 1.03 on a different computer and it worked. BUT it "checked file system" before it started.

The next day, I try to upload some more tracks from my main machine. "Checks file system" and gives me the 0xfffffff8 again. So I move it to the other machine. Queue up half the set of files for upload, it "checks file system" but it works. Weird.

On the second machine, queue up the other half of the files. It "checks file system" AGAIN, but fails with 0xfffffff8.

So, I bring it back to you. Ok, blame the 0xfffffff8 on 1.03, but why "check file system" on both 1.03 and 2.0final even after flashing those images on there? Any ideas? I'd really appreciate it.

Probably because there is something wrong. Please try this.

Thanks for the link Tony, sorry I didn't check it myself. Looks like that worked. I managed to do two syncs from Emplode. Both worked and neither did fsck. I'll keep my fingers crossed to hope I'm in the clear.

It was fun to get into a new level of detail with my empeg. Thanks for all your help everyone.
