Foreword:
I got my tunerkit at Saturday and my soldering iron has been turned on after a long time. When I've seen those many parts I thought it would be hard but the idiot-proof installation guide was perfect, even for me :-). I really didn't expect my tuner to work after the first plug in into my car's sled (couldn't test inhouse). It works! Happy for three I switched around and got some stations tuned in.

Question:
I searched for TMC but couldn't find a posting telling that's possible. In Germany you can use TMC, a subset of the RDS-System, to get information about traffic jam. But it looks like it is not implemented, but I'm sure I've read an article telling exactly this. Maybe it's in the 3rd Version of the player software...

Anybody out there who can tell me if TMC is supported or will be supported? Is it possible to get info from e.g. /dev/rds?

What's the easiest way to switch between tuner and mp3?

i dont have a tuner so i dont know exactly, but i think the easiest way would be to push the button labeled 'tuner' on your remote.

I once started a tmc implemetation for the empeg. The latest version shows the raw tmc data, but didn't decode it. I think it's two years since then. So the project is nearly dead for now and I'm not sure if it still works (hijack changes?, rds stream changes?)

I don't think that the official player software will ever support tmc, as it's not available in many different countries.

oh yes, I've seen your name when reading something of TMC. I know that outside Europe it's hard to find a RDS-Signal. But in Germany it's just too good for not using it.
I'm sure there are some people who will be very happy if TMC will be displayed. So there are two ways to accomplish this:

- I beg you to do it and you do it (not very imaginative)
- You are so kind and tell me your steps before and I do it alone (not very imaginative, too)
- My favourite: You give the community tips and howtos and all people who can code do it together (so my wife could see me sometimes - i'm married since just 48 days) but I can take part in coding (uhm, I'm better in PHP but should work).

Please don't let the TMC-feature go down only because of too little time. If everybody gives an hour, it should work, shouldn't it? :-)

I can see if I find my old TMC sources somewhere inside a vmware and publish it on my web page.
Another problem seems to be the location conversation table used for TMC. They are country dependend. I have an (old) location conversation table for switzerland, but I'm not sure if this is public material.

If we can extract the raw data and (best) putting it in /dev/tmc or something like this, then this was the first step.

I'm a bit late but I was once more asked to publish my tmc rds application. So here it is:

I have not worked on it for nearly 3 years now, so feel free to modify and adapt according to your needs.

What the application does:
- Binds into hijack menue
- Print out all tmc packages (console)
- Prepared to display the traffic messages

What it does NOT:
- Decode the messages and display them in clear text

What is needed to run the application:
- Actual hijack version
- Execute once the following command to create the necessary rds device:
mkfifo /dev/rds1
- The application must be started before the player software is running
(Can be done by simply restarting the player software after starting the tmc application)
- Activate receiving of tmc messages (Hijack menue --> TMC RDS Receiver --> TMC Dienst aktivieren)
- Last but not least you need a station which broadcasts tmc messages! :-)

The output of the application should look like this: (The application is in German!)

Although for speed, as I don't use the short tap of the knob for anything other than source change, the popup is set to Next Source. This means a quick double tap of the knob changes between mp3 and tuner - just works faster than the very long press.

If you really, truly, only ever use the quick knob press to switch sources, then you can eliminate the need for the second press by changing the Knob Press Redefinition (found in the main Hijack menu) to issue NextSrc directly, rather than via the PopUp0 menu.
